internet service - jm minica - 01-08-2006

Can anyone give me some information on the internet service on the east side? Is cable internet avaiable in all areas? What is the cost? Has anyone noticed a difference in the quality?
Mahalo,
Mark

The short answer is "no" -- cable internet and/or DSL are not available everywhere. In fact, there's large areas with no wired high-speed Internet capabilities. Leilani has cable, upper HPP does (limited), some of Nanawale, Orchidland and Hawaiian Beaches/Shores do as well. Its really spotty and you have to check with the companies to see if your area is covered.

We just got a landline and I am using Earthlink service. Its pretty fast for a landline internet connection. Downloads are a little slow but not bad for $22 for the phoneline and $21 for earthlink. We are in Tiki Gardens next to Ainaloa

John, Do you know where in HPP the cut-off is for Roadrunner? I'm thinking 20 something but can't recall.

Do you have dialup or DSL. I believe Earthlink DSL is not available here
anymore. Since ELNK was not about to
reach a carriage agreement with HawTel.

If you want a fast connection, I'd highly
suggest getting HawTel DSL at 29.99 a month.

RE: internet service - Cindy B - 08-15-2006

Maybe I should post a HPP specific thread. But I was wondering if anyone here in HPP happens to know where the general cut off is
for cable? For example, 24th ? 20th? I thought they ran it about half the way down.

Mahalo!

RE: internet service - macuu222 - 08-15-2006

We just signed up today 8/15/06 with Oceanic Time Warner for the full package...Digital Cable And Roadrunner with a set up for two computers and two TV's for $97.00 a month. We live off 5th Street and Makuu in HPP. We didn't think they had it down this far...but when I gave them my TMK address...they took all our information and said someone would contact me soon for an installation time.

I've lived in HPP for 16 years and have been contacting Time Warner Cable every year to see about getting cable to my home. This is the first time that they actually took our information and went ahead with scheduling. I just hope the installation isn't scheduled for 2015!

I usually try not to post bad things about companies unless I really have to. Stay away from SeismicInternet. I have been with them for a very long time but the company was recently sold and both connection and service went downhill since. My contract is up in October with them and I am outta there.

RE: internet service - glennoid - 08-15-2006

When we first moved here to Hawaiian Shores Rec in November 2005, I called Time Warner Oceanic to see about getting the cable / TV package you mentioned. They took my address and then told me 1) the nearest person who has cable is 3/10th of a mile away, and 2) they would have to do a survey at least a month later to give me an estimate on how much it would cost to trench a new line to my house. I told them it looked like the house was wired for cable, and finally got them to just send someone out to take a look. Turns out there was cable to the house already installed, they just "didn't know that". ** a little plus here for the benefits of reliable computerized maintenance systems **

Anyway, just saying that Time Warner doesn't always seem to know what's going on with their own stuff or know where their own cable is. Around here in most places it seems, the cable line is strung overhead from the same set of lines as the overhead power. So just look around, or get someone else to look around a particular neighborhood and see who else has cable...

As for the service and performance of Oceanic Time Warner cable, it has gone down for a few minutes here and there, but overall has been VERY fast (up to 5 Mbits / second download) and reliable.

Hope this helps,
Glenn

Time is an illusion, but a handy one. Without it, we would not be able to hear sounds, and without that ability, we would have no music.
