Supply/Shipping Problems - Kukiniloa - 02-13-2016

Has anyone noticed any shipping delays or supply chain problems? Maybe stocking problems in local stores? Please provide your experiences.

Mahalo Plenty!

Keaau Ace had their container pushed back at least once, so they've been out of some stuff.

Side effect of living here, you can actually see how fragile the supply chain is.

I have noticed a lot of empty food shelves at Target and Safeway and Walmart at the beginning of each month. EBT allotments are refilled at the beginning of each month and a food shopping frenzy ensues.

At the mere rumor of a shipping strike all the stores are emptied of toilet paper

The livestock feed stores have been consistently out of something every time we go for at least the last year. After the third week being told that they were out of poultry feed they told us that the shipping companies prioritize human goods first and that there wasn't enough room to ship all the livestock goods containers. I don't know if their story is true or if they are just bad at maintaining inventory. On the other hand, livestock feed has a very short shelf life here. We've had to return bags of feed that were moldy or infested. It's not like they can order a bunch of stuff ahead of time. It's part of the just-in-time / credit based supply chain that our economy is now based on.

Stocking problems in store shelves? Asking such a question makes it sound like you aren't from around here. Go to Walmart, Cost-U-Less, or Target on certain days of the week and there are entire sections of shelves that are empty.

It's not just a supply chain issue, there aren't enough stores here for the population. They are always frustratingly full of people to the point the staff can't restock the shelves except during the rare slow times and when the store is closed.

Welcome to Hawaii, please start growing food if you haven't already.

the shipping companies prioritize human goods first

They also seem to prioritize "seasonal" junk over food...

there aren't enough stores here for the population

Nor can they build more stores quickly, due to a lack of suitable real estate and the "uncertainty" (read: takes over twice as long) of the County permitting process.

That's the thing - Amazon has been slowed in delivery too...I wonder where in the supply chain this is happening. UPS/USPS/FedEx probably have lower volume so they aren't to blame, so it must be that Amazon itself has supply problems. With the downturn (don't say recession) in China, perhaps they are taking longer to fill hours...?

RE: Supply/Shipping Problems - terracore - 02-14-2016

Amazon has changed the way it ships to Alaska and Hawaii to save money.

Their previous business model was centered around getting the product shipped as soon as possible in the "Prime" 2-day spirit. Even though things seldom got here in the 2-day window, it was usually fast.

Under their new business model, they do not make any effort to ship things quickly, instead their only goal is to meet the delivery date, and the delivery dates keep getting longer and longer. Typically if you complain about delivery time and they met the delivery date, they will not provide any concession because they have fulfilled their service requirement. If you get something past the delivery date and complain about it, their current concession is usually to extend your Prime membership by 1 month.
