Departing to Hellstrom Chronicle - Carey contact? - sactokim - 02-15-2016

Our bags are packed, we leave sunny California for rainy Puna (VRBO in HB) tomorrow, with special interest in Fern Acres.

We hoped to meet Carey's PI friends, but Punweb PM is broken. I will put my contact info in the next post, then delete it later.

We are concerned about LFA and RLW - can these be controlled or will it get worse? (Just reviewed the FB page "Big Island Thieves" cited in recent topic - holy cow.)

We don't want to be in California if the grid goes down, rivers and wells run dry, and lines at the gas pump. But none of these might happen. (Might not be good in HI when the planes stop daily cargo flights from mainland either.) Currently we live 1/2 mile from Costco - nice walk through a nature trail.

At age 9 I saw this movie as new release in theater in 1971 - my brother and I still talk about it from that one viewing. The premise was that man and insects are in a battle for control of the Earth - and the insects will win. Prophetic - you might enjoy it:

Here's the segment on ants - not fire ants, but bad ones for sure:

We arrived in Kona (West side of Big Island) 9pm Tuesday, getting our rental car (same as our mainland car) before they closed, then drove several miles south to stay last night at "Uncle Billy's."

Wednesday we drove around the south of the island, arriving at our VBRO in Hawaiian Beach subdivision before dark - a few miles East of Pahoa. We stopped at Greenwell Farms for their coffee tour. We stopped at black sands beach - very windy with large waves, but sunny and nice. Then, as expected, as we passed over the 4000 ft summit at Volcano, we were in rain. But was all nice.

Arrived at our vbro in HB before dark.

Parts of the drive were something like: Fort Bragg, Highway 1, high desert, and The Philippines.

Drinking Kona Castaway IPA as I type this.

OBSERVATION: Thought we'd need to coat with DEET - but haven't seen an insect yet.

That's my favorite between the Hilo side and Kona side. We always stop at the black sand beach, and the Punaluu Bakery.

"Then, as expected, as we passed over the 4000 ft summit at Volcano, we were in rain."

We needed that. First real rain in some weeks.

"Parts of the drive were something like: Fort Bragg..."

Curious what part of the drive was that.

Rain was nice. One day we'll do saddle road then loop to north then loop back east - not today.. too much time in car and plane. today probably south puna coast - see the homes on lava then the warm water spots.

here's a streetview of Fort Bragg highway that seemed similar to sections south of Captain Cook:

Perhaps the "Lost Coast" region with the muddy dirt roads in dense forest?

Edited for grammar

South Kona <----> Ocean View is very similar to Fort Bragg <----> Willits what with all the twists and turns.

Tink: I've never made it to Lost Coast - need to do that - been up Avenue of the Giants a few times... agreed.

Joe: I did that road years ago in a 30' RV rental - plenty of turns.

Thanks, kim. Smile I think we may have had different Ft. Braggs in mind. The one in Ca. surely must be more scenic.

ke Aloha Kim!
