W.H. Shipman wants to add traffic lights on Highway 11 to aid motorists driving into its business park, and is seeking a $2.75 million appropriation to get the project done.

How "ironic", when SureSave wanted a traffic light at Orchidland/130, they had to pay -- which obligation was relieved by bankruptcy. Now Shipman wants a traffic light, and we get to pay for it. Why not a roundabout, aren't they superior?

When a proposal to rezone the property at Hwy 130 and Auli'i was submitted, same thing, businesses were told they needed to pay $250,000 for a stop light, maybe more for turn lanes. Should have named it the "Shipman Mini-Mall" or "Uncle Robert's Shops and Things."

That will sure put a dent in the HPD speed trap at the top of the rise coming from Volcano side.

I'd be much more willing to support a traffic light at the Shipman entrance if Bill Wallters would quit doing everything in his power to prevent a lower Puna access road between Kapoho and Hilo!

I agree 110%, however what makes you think that the man who can block such an access road isn't going to get a traffic light if he wants one?

Just wait for the traffic jams when DOT doesn't bother to synchronize this new light with 130/11...

This is ridiculous. How many tens of thousands of people are going to get longer commute times every day and how many thousands of barrels of oil will that cause to be imported so 1,000 people can shave a few seconds off THEIR commute? NO WAY!

Time, gas, oil - - and we the taxpayers will pay for Shipman's stoplight costing us our time and gas while we're stuck in traffic!

Isn't it more about being able to market the Shipman Industrial Lots as having improved ingress/egress?
