Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Final Plan release - Rob Tucker - 03-10-2016 Moderator: Received today by email: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park release of Final GMP Aloha Friends, We are pleased to announce the release of the Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park Abbreviated Final General Management Plan/Wilderness Study/Environmental Impact Statement (Final GMP/WS/EIS). This plan provides long-term management guidance about the preservation and use of this national treasure. This Abbreviated Final GMP/WS/EIS serves as an extension of the Draft GMP/WS/EIS and includes an analysis of comments received on the draft document with NPS responses, errata sheets detailing editorial corrections to the draft document, and copies of agency, business, and organization public comments. Both the Draft and Final GMP/WS/EIS are available online at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/havogmp, and CDs of the documents, as well as the full abbreviated final document, have been distributed to all of the public libraries on Hawai‘i Island. Over the past several years, many of you have participated in the planning process through public meetings and formal comments received via mail, comment forms, and website forums. As you may remember, the NPS released the Draft GMP/WS/EIS for your review in May 2015. During the 60-plus days that the document was available for your review and comment, the NPS received 32 pieces of correspondence on the draft plan. As with the feedback we received through the previous outreach efforts, this commentary was thoughtful, helpful, and sincere. We would like to thank all those who commented for sharing their insights. We also would like to express our appreciation to the many people – partners, advisors, and members of the public – who provided input throughout the planning process. Your input has confirmed our belief that alternative 2 is the preferred alternative and that the management actions it proposes will best guide long-term stewardship of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. The Final GMP/WS/EIS is in an abbreviated form because comments received during the public review period required only minor responses and editorial changes to the Draft GMP/WS/EIS. There are no substantial changes to the alternatives or the impact analyses presented in the Draft GMP/WS/EIS, and alternative 2 remains the preferred alternative. This abbreviated format of the final plan has allowed us to produce a simple, brief document and to avoid the costly reprinting of the entire 500-plus page document. The public release of the Abbreviated Final GMP/WS/EIS will be followed by a 30-day no-action period, after which the NPS will prepare a record of decision to document the selected alternative. During this time you are welcome to provide comments on the plan at the website listed above: http://parkplanning.nps.gov/havogmp. We also encourage you to read our responses to your comments (starting on page 3 in the Final GMP/WS/EIS) and check out the few changes made to the draft document (starting on page 19) in this final abbreviated plan. The Abbreviated Final GMP/WS/EIS and the Draft GMP/WS/EIS will, together, constitute the documentation upon which the record of decision will be based. Thank you again for your interest and participation in this important planning effort at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Mahalo nui loa, Cindy Orlando Superintendent |
