RE: 4.6 earthquake near Waikoloa, felt in Orchidland - Guest - 03-20-2016 Maunaloa has been shaking more of late as well, 3.0 or higher earthquakes are becoming a bit more frequent around maunaloa. Many of the big island quakes may come from lava movement, either to or from our active volcanoes. Pretty sure that maunaloa is slightly over due for an eruption. When she does erupt (not if) the volume of lava can be much greater than what we are use to seeing from Kilauea, jmo. http://www.earthmagazine.org/article/living-shadow-mauna-loa-silent-summit-belies-volcanos-forgotten-fury Added a link worth the time to read or remind some. RE: 4.6 earthquake near Waikoloa, felt in Orchidland - macuu222 - 03-20-2016 I slept through it here in lower HPP. RE: 4.6 earthquake near Waikoloa, felt in Orchidland - TomK - 03-20-2016 Didn't feel a thing in HPP, but it was felt on Mauna Kea, enough to give UKIRT a shove and shift its alignment plus break a shear pin (it basically twisted the telescope mount around a little bit). We had to crank the thing back into position this evening and replace the pin. Fortunately there was no other damage. |
