FYI:

Media Release

An unidentified woman was killed Monday (March 28) after being struck by a vehicle on Route 130, .1 mile south of Kaloli Drive in Kea#699;au.

A 22-year-old Hilo man came to the Hilo Police Station on Monday morning at about 1:00 a.m. and reported that he may have been involved in a traffic collision in the area of Route 130 and Kaloli Drive.

Officers making checks in the area discovered a deceased female on the mauka shoulder of the road.

Officers determined that the female victim appeared to be walking in the P#257;hoa direction on the mauka shoulder of the road when she was struck by a 2003 Ford Ranger pick-up truck traveling in a southerly direction.

It is unknown at this time if speed, alcohol or drugs are involved.

The victim was transported to the Hilo Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 6:09 a.m.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide, accident involving death or serious bodily injury and no operator’s license cases.

Police have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

The victim is described as being a local female with brown hair, between the ages of 25 and 30 years old and wearing a black t-shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information regarding this case or the identity of the victim is asked to call Officer Keith Nacis at 961-8119 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

This is the 6th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared to five at the same time last year.

Walking with her back to the traffic after dark wearing a black t-shirt.
Seems the driver may not have stopped, but he did go to police.

Definitely all her fault. Walking down the street NAKED with a black shirt PAINTED on. The Ranger was just doing society a public service.

The police don't usually announce fake traffic fatalities, there were cops all over the place at that intersection at about 3 this morning and someone is wondering why their loved one hasn't called or made it home. It sounds like this woman possibly lived here, probably has all kinds of friends and family on island, maybe even people who read punaweb.

I agree, immature and in poor taste to use this death as an opportunity for humor.

First my condolences go out to the victims friends and family.

This is really a sad and disturbing traffic accident to have, especially around easter. Personally i find Some very disturbing things from that article opihikao linked. I would think that the almost full moon could have acted like a big bright light for the (25 year old female victim), especially around 1:00 a.m. not much traffic around. Also if I understand correctly( from the article) the driver(male) age (22) did not have a license to operate a vehicle, why? Also, the driver should have stayed at the scene of possible accident, as to avoid hitting and leaving the scene of an accident. Why did he drive to the police station(5-10 minutes)? He may have had, or owned, a cell phone? By calling 911 immediately for help could have saved critical time in a life or death concern or possibility. Very sad indeed, a bit fishy, with to much precious youth for me.jmo
