keonepoko elementary school - ksuiss - 04-09-2016 Have anybody on this list sent their kids to keonepoko elementary school? What are your thoughts on this school? Thanks, K RE: keonepoko elementary school - 2liveque - 04-09-2016 You will hear many things. I sent two of my kids to Keonepoko. First and foremost, know that Keonepoko, Pahoa, keaau, mountain view schools serve the most poorest segments of the state of Hawaii. To no fault of anyone, this is the reality of where we live. Schools that lie in these regions have special programs and external dollars geared to fund fund them. Long story short, kindergarten and 1st grade is as good as anywhere. As students progress to the higher grades however, I must say that the challenges grew larger. Much of the problems stem from home. Im sure all schools deal with bad parenting. The poor regions seem to up the ante a bit. Lots of good teachers, but some who are not. There are sheer realities to going to a school that serves a high percentage of kids from the lower end of the economic scale. I do not fault the poor for any of this.rather, this is Puna. Puna is host to old residents, new residents, those who have, and many many more who have not. RE: keonepoko elementary school - shockwave rider - 04-09-2016 I have known people who work there who are dedicated caring professionals and I have also heard absolute horror stories about vicious and dangerous anti-mainland bullying being ignored by administration when given clear and convincing evidence. In one case the parents were told it was to be expected and just part of moving to Hawaii by the administrator they talked to. I think like everything here personal experience will vary. edited for typo RE: keonepoko elementary school - Tink - 04-09-2016 Best thing I have found is to be active in your child's education no matter where they are. Get to know teachers, other classmates parents, especially the ones your child talks about. Most important of all, home school them as well. You know your child's passion in life and integrate their school studies by adapting them to their passion. Also, keep in mind, the educators job is to give the student their studies. Not manners, discipline, listening skills, etc.. You will be amazed in the results, and their college potential by doing this.
