Hono Hono Orchids - Lee M-S - 04-19-2016
I've been seeing what I thought were Hono Hono Orchids in bloom all over--huge Dendrobium Nobiles orchids in trees, many thick branches of light purple flowers with dark centers.
But when I asked for them at BIAN, I was shown a scrawny, delicate plant.
So...which is the Hono Hono?
Note: I found Nobiles at HD (a white and a yellow) for about $8.50. I got the yellow.

Many of the vigorous Dendrobiums you see around are probably Nobile hybrids based on Den. nobile.
What is locally called Hono Hono is Den. anosmum, or is at least supposed to be bases on that species.
I agree that most everything called Hono Hono is quite scrawny compared to the Den. anosmums I have kept before coming to Hawai'i.
Plus, most that I have come across here do not have the very nice raspberry fragrance that a good D. anosmum should have.
I'm thinking that the climate here has encouraged everyone that could, plus their sister, brother, cousin, cat and dog to propagate them to create some income without any thought to maintaining desirable plants.
I'm probably wrong.
But, I can see no other explanation for the degradation of a fine orchid species.

Thanks for straightening that out. I actually have been seeing nobiles in trees, just thought they were honohonos.
