hypothetical question. . - alaskyn66 - 05-19-2016 Let's say I just bought a decommissioned aircraft carrier from a second world country ... like the US.. and wanted to anchor it about 20 miles offshore of Hawaii island. What legal mumbo jumbo hoops would I have to jump through. ..What would King Kamehameha do.. RE: hypothetical question. . - Eric1600 - 05-19-2016 First off that'd be almost impossible. You'd need about 3000+ feet of chain to be anchored that far offshore and you'd have to contend with hurricanes. You could argue you're in international waters at 12 or more miles, but most likely they would say you're obstructing navigational traffic and tell you to move. If it is decommissioned they might declare it unfit and seize it as a navigational hazard or insist you move on to your country of registry or some other port. Inside the 12 mile zone you'll have to follow US and State Rules which will be quite strict. RE: hypothetical question. . - Lee M-S - 05-19-2016 If you're actually thinking about doing something like this, asking here is a waste of time. If you're NOT actually thinking about doing this, asking here is a waste of time. ><(((*< ... ><(("< ... ><('< ... >o> RE: hypothetical question. . - shockwave rider - 05-19-2016 If you could work out the legal and weather related issues it would be a great place for a casino. There is precedence in international law: http://www.sealandgov.org/ RE: hypothetical question. . - TomK - 05-19-2016 As Bugs Bunny might have said, "I'm Elmer J Fudd, millionaire, I own a mansion and an aircraft carrier" RE: hypothetical question. . - Seeb - 05-19-2016 Whatever it is has to be flagged or you have no rights under international law. If it's US flagged then you have to follow all coastguard regs RE: hypothetical question. . - b_a - 05-19-2016 Well of course he's not going to be US flagged - nobody is! Panama, Liberia and the Marshall Islands flag almost 40% of the world. ...we are everywhere... RE: hypothetical question. . - kalakoa - 05-20-2016 This one has crossed my mind... Assume, for the moment, that the flag/anchor issues can be solved; further assume that the carrier doesn't need to move, thereby eliminating the fuel issue. Does the surface of an aircraft carrier have enough area for farming? How many people could that farm support? Sealand is not quite the right precdent despite being mostly on-point. RE: hypothetical question. . - alaskyn66 - 05-20-2016 That's pretty much what I had in mind.basically a floating island. Towed to its destination, refitted to be solar powered.. ..What would King Kamehameha do.. RE: hypothetical question. . - EvilOctopus - 05-20-2016 1) Go watch Waterworld. I imagine you as a more eco friendly version of the guy on the oil tanker. 2) This can be accomplished quite a bit cheaper by buying/building a cheap boat, taking it to Keehi lagoon in Honolulu and living on a mooring ball. (just be sure to register your boat in Hawaii, way cheaper) I've seen all manor of odd stuff out there from floating shacks to sunken fishing boats to piver trimarans with a 2nd story built on stilts and couches anchored out on old pieces of styrofoam. |
