Petition for Internet expansion in Puna - Darnok - 06-15-2016

How many of us want to have reliable and fast Internet connection. In my humble belief Time-Warner Oceanic is the best option. Unfortunately in my area of Leilani, TWO is not available. Maybe if we can show them how many of us would be interested in using their service, Time Warner would be motivated to take advantage of this demand.

If you have 20 (or is it 25?) houses per mile then they have to give it to you (if you're not in the middle of nowhere).
Otherwise it's an uphill battle.

Not Time Warner anymore. It is Charter and Charter has spun it off as Spectrum.

This cable network was Roadrunner and most of it still is Roadrunner vintage. Charter usually goes in and puts fiber on the main trunk lines. It depends on the size of the market, if they upgrade or not. Puna is a small market but it is only one trunk in. They could run one fiber all the way to Kalapana, turn around and take down the huge copper line. The cost of fiber is way down and the installation isn't as difficult as it once was. The small market may be due to unavailability plus there is a lot of area considered "the last mile". Might be better to ask them what plans for Puna are.

"Aloha also means goodbye. Aloha!"

20 (or is it 25?) houses per mile

...all the way to your location...

They could run one fiber all the way to Kalapana

Telcom fiber goes to Leilani, will be extended to Seaview "next year" (using Federal "Connect America" grants, of course).

Hawaiian Telcom seems to have no plans to extend to Kapoho despite our repeated requests. Our "high speed internet" plan gets us approx 0.3mbps in the evenings. It's a total ripoff.
We need Hawaiian Telcom for the landline. There is no cell phone service at the house and we can't stretch social security to add an additional isp.
We wrote to Brian Schatz asking if he'd be interested in introducing legislation to require the PUC to oversee internet service as well as telephone service, it's a necessity these days, but we have had no response.
What to do?

Satellite.

RE: Petition for Internet expansion in Puna - Mimosa - 06-16-2016

TWC - Now Spectrum say that a person wanting their service MUST ask to be put on their list .
But the list is long and not worth their bottom line .
They also remove all from the list every 6 to 12 months - so every one must re do their request at least 2 times a year.
One manager at the new spectrum actually told us " Not in your life time " or just sell and move if you desire our service .
H-Telcom pretty much same excuses.
We have slow dial up via Flex dot com on a land line .
Sometimes we go library for fast internet in Mtn View or down town Hilo.
No cell reception where we reside in Hawaiian Acres 4 and D.

Hawaiian Acres 4 and D

Call Telcom; 4/D is within range of the new DSLAM at 1/C, which had (at install time) 72 ports of ADSL.
