Season 4 of "Orange Is The New Black" dropped recently on Netflix, and one of the new characters is a Hawaiian woman. She's tough, takes no guff, and quickly finds a position inside the prison as (SPOILER*). By Episode 2 she makes the requisite mention of poi.
HAPAKUKA
Piper’s new Hawaiian roommate is tough and tough talking - even doing leg lifts using the bunks. Hapakuka also loves Ovaltine and delivers plenty of zingers.

She certainly doesn't portray the typical Hawaiian hula girl you might expect from a mainland TV show, but so far, I like the role she plays.
There's another new program on Showtime called "Roadies" which has a very large guy named Puna in the first episode. He's Hawaiian (played by a Native American actor), clairvoyant, in charge of band security, and has access to other planes of knowledge.
What do you think about the way Hawaiians are portrayed on TV today? Realistic? Or too heavily typecast as "the muscle?" I don't watch a lot of television, so has anyone else seen examples of other types of Hawaiian characters?
