"fight the bite" relaunch - kalakoa - 07-02-2016 http://www.westhawaiitoday.com/news/local-news/fight-bite-relaunched-statewide-light-zika-threat In the last six months, there have been 10 imported cases of dengue, five cases of Zika and a case of chikungunya in Hawaii. None have become locally transmitted, Department of Health Director Virginia Pressler said. Still think State can stop ROD? RE: "fight the bite" relaunch - terracore - 07-02-2016 My favorite part of the article was "get rid of standing water around their property, fix windows, screen and leaky hoses, dispose of old tires".... after seeing the sign at the transfer station "NO TIRES ARE ACCEPTED AT ANY TRANSFER STATION". How does illegally dumping old tires stop the spread of mosquito-related illnesses? Seems like keeping them on your property and covering them with a tarp would be more effective. ETA: Not much RE: "fight the bite" relaunch - leilanidude - 07-02-2016 The county should offer a bounty on old tires. Maybe $2 each? Would have to be cheaper than trying to contain another outbreak and the resulting drop in tourism and the tax money? RE: "fight the bite" relaunch - terracore - 07-02-2016 I'm not saying a bounty isn't a bad idea... but offering a free legal place to take them would be a thousand times better than the current policy of illegal dumping being the only means available to rid oneself of old tires. Once those tires get tossed into the jungle a few feet from the side of the road, they will be breeding mosquitoes for all our lifetimes, and nobody will ever see them. RE: "fight the bite" relaunch - leilanidude - 07-02-2016 My thought is, a lot of people here seem to need an incentive to do the right thing to begin with. RE: "fight the bite" relaunch - terracore - 07-02-2016 Sad, but true. RE: "fight the bite" relaunch - birdmove - 07-02-2016 Anyone know if the tire stores in Hilo will take them?? Will they take them at the Hilo Dump? I do my own motorcycle and scooter tires, but always take a car to a tire shop. Jon in Keaau/HPP RE: "fight the bite" relaunch - b_a - 07-02-2016 My guess is that the tire shops will charge you a fee per tire. I know when I purchase tires here on the mainland (and I purchase a lot of them for a school district fleet) there is a line item charge for disposal of tires that they can't recap and resell. ...we are everywhere... RE: "fight the bite" relaunch - Punatic007 - 07-02-2016 I think our transfer stations are part of the Dengue mosquito problem. No tires accepted, some stations are only open a couple of days a week like Kalapana, what's up with that? And it's manned with security guards to tell you what not to dump. Trade the price of their salaries special pick ups for unwanted would be more than affordable. Paying folks to guard the garbage and keep us out? Geez, this place seems eternally backwards at times. Why continue to be a part of the problem instead of getting with the program and educating themselves on the fact that mosquitos are drawn to garbage and standing water? Come on for goodness sake and help us out! Is the county too busy to communicate with the state health dept or what?!! Billy what the h3ll are you doing downtown? Step up to the plate! RE: "fight the bite" relaunch - Chunkster - 07-02-2016 "Geez, this place seems eternally backwards at times." I think we all knew that already, but thanks for the reminder. |
