A world without mosquitos - Rob Tucker - 07-03-2016

Interesting articles exploring the potential to eliminate mosquitoes from Earth.

I'm all for it. They were brought to Hawaii as an invasive anyway.

"So what would happen if there were none? Would anyone or anything miss them? Nature put this question to scientists who explore aspects of mosquito biology and ecology, and unearthed some surprising answers."

Interesting articles Rob. Although some might believe that:
"The ecological effect of eliminating harmful mosquitoes is that you have more people. That's the consequence," says Strickman." would be sufficient reason not to eliminate them...

It raises an interesting point for philosophical discussion..... would people eliminating mosquitoes or mosquitoes eliminating people (or both) be considered part of natural selection?

RE: A world without mosquitos - Guest - 07-03-2016

The food source mosquitoes may bring to other earth living creatures may need to be strongly considered. Earths flower pollination should also be another great concern. jmo

would eliminating the world of mosquitoes allow for a greater chance of over populations of other living creatures?

Maybe the Big Island would be a good test zone because there are no native mosquitoes. And not that many people die here of mosquito-borne diseases.

Get rid of all the buzzers here, and see what happens.

The only good skeeter is a dead one.

Let's start with the ones that bite people and kill millions a year, see how that goes.

RE: A world without mosquitos - Lee M-S - 07-03-2016

probably easier to GMO something that kills all kinds, rather than just one species.
Do mosquitoes pollinate flowers? I know the males are vegetarian, but thought they suck juices rather than nectar.

I dont see how getting rid of mosquitoes will do anything to the island..other than starving the coqui frogs out.

...And the people bowed and prayed... to the neon God they made.

RE: A world without mosquitos - MarkP - 07-03-2016

Coqui frogs don't eat any significant number of mosquitoes.
