Lava flow approching Emergency Road and Ocean - Eric1600 - 07-26-2016

JULY 23

The 61g lava flow is still active on the coastal plain on K#299;lauea’s south flank, and as of Sunday USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists reported lava was 0.15 miles from the coastal emergency road in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

John Tarson of Epic Lava Tours says it looks like the lava flow is going to cross the road today. In a video update posted to the Epic Lava Facebook page today, Tarson estimated the lava was only 150 to 200 feet away.

Thanks Eric.

Does anyone know how long it now takes to walk from where you park your car to get to the flowing lave? From the Kalapana side.

We were planning to bicycle down the road this evening to go see... anyone know for sure if that is still permitted?

The county was letting people go to the end of the paved part of the Chain of Craters Rescue Road, that is, 3 miles in. This is crossing the road beyond that, what looks like less than a mile. It will probably be against the rules to go past the paved part but lightly patrolled.

It's entering the ocean now.

Yeah, I knew that. My July calendar showed it reaching the ocean this month.

Thanks Ted! Judging by the photos in this article, walking right up to the lava seems possible...

PaulW: to answer your question it depends on what kind of a walker you are. From a shuffler to a smooth strider to full golfers gait. But whatever, lets just say the average mile is walked in 15 minutes. From where you have to park, past 2 gates, up to where the lava is seems longer than 3 miles. More like 4. The oozing red stuff was an addition half mile hike off road when I went, last full moon, (best time to do it btw) for a total of 9 miles. Sounds like it's right at the road now so 8 miles and 2 hours round trip. Plus the time to take pictures and gawk in awe at Pele's magnificence
