Saturday Saddle Road Shenanigans - EightFingers - 07-31-2016 Driving in a line of cars in the construction area, some dude decides to pass a couple of us. We we're not exactly going slowly either. It takes some real cajones to pass anything in that hilly and curvy area. On the way up, someone is coming towards us in our lane. I guess they didn't note the oncoming traffic before they decided to pass. Fortunately, no cars to the right of us so we were able to get out of "their" way. Kona side going down another car was using our lane as a "third lane" to pass as he was coming UP the mountain and we headed down. I guess the two lanes weren't enough for this one. We had to drive on the shoulder to get out of "his" way. Also, on the way down we're in a line of seven cars. Truck passed all of us at once. Three oncoming cars were just a couple seconds away. This was near the Waikii Exit. We were not going exactly slow, either. Bet that one had to be doing around 90.... Amazing we made it back home in one piece.... RE: Saturday Saddle Road Shenanigans - Guest - 07-31-2016 I'm happy to read tales about driving happening on our new big roads. No need worry, they got it, just let and shaka in. all good right ? now U have story RE: Saturday Saddle Road Shenanigans - ericlp - 07-31-2016 Where is the Aloha? Slow down peepps, seen plenty police cars pulling these people over and for good reason it seems! RE: Saturday Saddle Road Shenanigans - kalakoa - 08-01-2016 Where is the Aloha? I always show plenty aloha to "aggressive" drivers -- they want a ticket so bad, I'm happy to help, slow down, let 'em pass... RE: Saturday Saddle Road Shenanigans - MarkP - 08-01-2016 Years ago back when the Saddle road was largely unimproved I had just turned onto it coming from Kona. Knowing it was only 1 1/2 lanes for many miles to come I pulled over and let the gray rental sedan that was riding my bumper pass. later, at the top of the twisty section leading down into Hilo, I passed him. A trail of broken brush and car parts led from where he had failed to anticipate a turn and had instead plowed straight ahead off the road to where his tail lights poked out of the vegetation. RE: Saturday Saddle Road Shenanigans - jrw - 08-01-2016 I don't whats going on with saddle road the last time I was on it I was going 60 mph and two different times people pass me on the shoulder of the road in no passing zones one was big box van . I know the they police patrol this road. It a matter of time to someone gets killed up there again. jrw RE: Saturday Saddle Road Shenanigans - Lee M-S - 08-01-2016 I'm always happy when a tailgater passes me. "Better out than in, I always say!" ><(((*< ... ><(("< ... ><('< ... >o> RE: Saturday Saddle Road Shenanigans - leilanidude - 08-01-2016 eightfingers - There are legal passing zones where you are allowed to go into the "middle lane", which would be the other side that has 2 lanes of traffic vs your one. Check out the striping and signs next time up there. However, that doesn't excuse stupid and reckless passing in those places. RE: Saturday Saddle Road Shenanigans - pahoated - 08-01-2016 There are also long stretches going over to Kona that are two lanes but the right lane is a do not use, apparently for emergencies only. This is where people are probably getting the pass on the right thing going on. People just need to get used to single file driving on an island. On the mainland, a long string of cars is considered unsafe and the lead driver is required by law to pull over. They just need to add a couple stretches of pull over lanes and it would resolve a lot of this rage/frustration driving over Saddle. *Japanese tourist on bus through Pahoa, "Is this still America?* RE: Saturday Saddle Road Shenanigans - jrw - 08-01-2016 The idiots pass on the shoulder with no pass lane on either side. Hawaii has the same law after so many cars behind you. jrw |
