Free Pics of Aftermath Iselle wanted - lo-ka-hi - 08-08-2016
Aloha Punawebbers,
my subdivision like many others is actively eradicating Albizia with the help of the Big Island Species Committee (BIISC).
Most of the Albizia are on the lots of absentee owners who don't have a clue how dangerous these trees are and often enough don't give permission to eradicate them.
But if the HOA's could post pictures on their websites of fallen Albizia, broken power line masts, power lines laying across roads, damaged houses and so on, the absentee owners would get a much better picture of the problem and be more inclined to participate in their eradication programs.
Since pictures on the Internet are copyrighted, I am looking for pics taken by residents that they are willing to share for free.

What kalakoa says is happening in HPP. We call them "guerrilla albizia killers," but I don't know who they are or whether they are targeting specific situations or just generically killing the menacing trees. In one particular case on my road, I'm pretty sure a new homeowner poisoned a whole lot full next to his premises because they were already starting to overhang and would soon threaten his new house. I sort of understand that, but the legal ramifications could be troublesome if it could be proven who was doing the unauthorized poisoning.
Meanwhile, HELCO doesn't seem to be very proactive in keeping their lines clear. We have actually called them about trees of various sorts overhanging their lines, and they can't be bothered to do anything.

LOL, HOTPE! You're quite right. It would take catching someone in the act, and there's a still a good chance that nothing would happen even then. I do wonder, however, about unintended consequences. What if some well intentioned person poisons a tree and as a result it falls on someone or their property causing injury or damage? At the end of the day, the community needs to deal with these monster trees one way or another.

Chunkster, good morning to you.
Hope you don't mind me asking but what do you mean when you say unauthorized poisoning?
Hundreds of Albizia tree's near the Geothermal power plant, Lava tree park, and Leilani area have also been targeted by teams of what you call "guerilla albezia killers". These guys looked like county workers or possibly a group from the UHH Univeristy, jmo.
As for Helco and keeping their lines clear, they are always busy clearing or checking their profitable power lines. We recently saw them flying in Leilani last week Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, well over 3 or 4 hours of work total. They often check the powerline road from Geothermal to the Pahoa highway first before flying over the smaller lines on the individual roads, doing what looks like power or telephone line inspections.

They use a helicopter to check most of the lines on the island, because it is faster and better than doing it from the ground. They always advertise 7-10 days in advance, in the newspaper of where and when they will be doing the line checks. There is no conspiracy.
