Albizia is good for the environment and useful? - randomq - 08-08-2016

It puts nitrogen in the ground, captures a ton of carbon, and creates soil every time limbs fall and decay.

It can be made into surfboards and furniture, pallets, and even used in some forms of construction. It can be burned as a biofuel, or pulped for paper and textiles.

It is also a very beautiful tree, when not hanging over your home, roads, or utility lines.

Maybe Albizia has a place here in Hawaii.

The wood isn't strong enough to make toothpicks.

Check out this article, especially the comments:

I think I recently started a thread about this: uses for invasive species. http://www.punaweb.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=22564

Here's another albezia use. Not sure about that students idea for a home though, not much information on that link about how he plans to go about seeing it through. http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/26039839/surfboard-builder-finds-gold-in-albizia-wood

I wish that Hawaii weed site from your other thread was picture indexed! It'd make it much easier to identify all this stuff popping up!

I've seen the Albizia boards down at Pohoiki, they are sweet.

That's the page I was referring to. The link to buy the book with the visual index is broken, but I see it elsewhere online for $20.

Thanks.

Oh ok. But you can click on any genus of plant on that page and see a good picture of the species and identify it.

This book available as a free downloadable pdf features line drawings of Hawaiian weeds, sorted by type (grasses, composites, etc.) A section at the back explains the botanical terms they use so you can describe and search for a plant:

"Handbook of Hawaiian Weeds" by E. L. Haselwood, G. G. Motter http://scholarspace.manoa.hawaii.edu/bitstream/handle/10125/6806/Haselwood%26Motter1966.pdf?sequence=1
clicking on link downloads the pdf onto your computer, does not open a new page.
You can also borrow a paper copy from the library, or pay $50+ for your very own copy.

BS! obviously anyone who would encourage Albizia in Hawaii, doesnt care at all about Hawaii...
Hawaii has no place for the extremely invasive Albizia... Hawaii's endemic plants dont need or want extra nitrogen, they never did and never will..... Hawaii's unique flora and fauna are all in danger making these islands the endangered species capital of the World... Albizia = invasive rubbish that needs to be killed

******************************************************************
save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha
