Drones of the Sea - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 08-22-2016

A man in California built a solar powered autonomous boat, which recently traveled 2,413 miles in 41 days to the Big Island. 41 days, that's almost as fast as my last three Amazon deliveries:

Indeed, the idea of this tiny, homemade boat surviving 2,400 miles of open ocean to reach Hawaii seems foolishly unrealistic, and I know that more than anybody else. With help from friends, I built the eight-foot-long, autonomous, foam-and-fiberglass, solar-powered SeaCharger in my garage – not to make money or to win a contest, but simply as a challenge. And a challenge it was.

This will send a shudder among many circles. The Colombians will see this news and they are already building submarines and submersibles in the jungle, using diesels and snorkels, switching to solar panels and electric plus autonomous are going to look very profitable.

This went into trials recently. There is no avoiding robots on the ocean in the coming years.

There is quite a bit of research going into sailing container ships. If the sails can be covered with solar panels, and the container ship is autonomous, shipping costs, as well as CO2 emissions, can be greatly reduced.

Electric marine is starting to happen, along with electric flight. The recent news that MIT has developed a different type of lithium battery, twice as much power in half the volume, using a fraction of the lithium, and much safer than current lithium-ion means massive changes ahead.
