Will this affect our lives on the Big Island?

Yes - it makes off- limits a very large area that is used by the Hawaii long-line fishing industry. (ahi being one of the main catches there)

Hawaii long-line fishing industry
...
Hope it comes with a bailout...

I have a... sinking... suspicion this thread could be headed straight to the bottom.

But before we go down with the ship, the CNN article states:
Midway Atoll, is also considered a critical region in the establishment of Native Hawaiian cultures and the site of long-distance voyaging

Making a quick search I could only find reference to it's "discovery" in 1859 in the wiki article:
Midway has no indigenous inhabitants and was uninhabited until the nineteenth century.

Does anyone know what occurred on Midway Island in human or Native Hawaiian history before that date?

These are called the Northwest Hawaiian island chain. Hawaii actually has 137 islands. The area is remote, the islands were already protected. This expansion is widening the protection into the deep ocean on both sides. Very little effect on Hawaii island and Hawaii island fishermen weren't going to be fishing in that area anyway. What it does is prevent foreign fish factory ships from fishing in the area.

The ahi migration path is further north and they are endangered anyway due to over fishing, ocean warming, ocean acidification.

In other places these sorts of marine sanctuaries have actually improved the fishing in areas outside the sanctuary, because they serve as nurseries for fish stocks that then move out of the sanctuary.

Obama will arrive in Hawaii next week Wednesday, then travel to Midway on Thursday to speak about expansion of the Papahanumokuakea Marine National Monument:

After addressing leaders in Honolulu, Obama will travel to Midway Atoll on Thursday ... and "highlight first-hand how the threat of climate change makes protecting our public lands and waters more important than ever," the White House said.
