Building a deck - River - 09-16-2016

Hello we are planing on building a deck, trying to decide on what material to use. Thank you for any suggestions you can give us.

River, I have lived long enough to have to tear down decks I have built. I decided I wanted a lifetime deck, so I built my latest of Trex and Veranda (trex-like composite from Home Depot). Three years later, they both began to decompose. "You musta got a bad batch." Yeah. I musta. My sister's Trex deck, built before mine, is still fine. Ipe maybe? Maybe treated wood with a coating? I'm interested in what others have to say myself. Good luck!

if you build a deck, build a roof over it... then you will only have to do a water seal every year and it might make it a few years... nothing will last uncovered... been here long enough to try everything... best protection is jasco if still sold in hawaii, or something else with copper in it... after a month or so, you can use something else that isn't so toxic...

I have an above ground pool that I don't really want to cover, so frustrating. I have heard there are some new products but I don't think they are on island.

IMO
in Puna you want a lanai.. a deck with a roof... if not, the deck area is useless a good % of the time when we get our fifteen feet of rain/yr, and all the stuff out there needs to be sun and water proof..... sun does alot of damage too...... btw, depends on where you live, you also may want to screen it in too...

save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha

ah pool deck, above ground. why don't you give peter a call at pacific gunite and see if he has any ideas. he is so creative! he might be able to blast a solid built deck. after all his water tank covers span his big tanks. give him a call see what he says..

I don't know why they don't sell the "good" treated wood here. We used to buy the green stuff in SE Alaska and it was impervious to rot. The Hi-Bor stuff they sell here doesn't compare.

I have a deck material called Rumber which will last longer than your grandkids will live. But it's from Texas and rather expensive to buy and ship.

www.rumber.com

It is good looking and soft on the feet. It is mostly commercial/industrial but it comes in colors. I have a deck made with it at my house.

rather expensive to buy and ship.

The nice folks at Rumber were able to price it, but they never got back to me with a freight quote.

As always, I wish there was a "wood alternatives warehouse store" on-island...

Argus has CA-C lumber.
