Auto A/C - rocketman - 09-16-2016
Anyone have a recommendation for a good place to bring the car to get the A/C fixed? I think it needs a new compressor.

Some A/C problems have cheap DIY remedies, what's the symptoms? Is it blowing air but its not cold or is the blower not working either?
ETA: I did have a Jeep with a bad compressor. I took it to 3 places: Lex Brodies, Firestone, and Curlees. The estimates were all about the same, just over $1000.00.

You should be able to hear the compressor, or at least an rpm change on its cycle while running to check if electrical is good. If no run on compressor, but all systems appear "go" inside with fan blowing, appropriate lights/indicators on, check the fuse on the compressor side circuit in fuse box, usually the one in the engine compartment, not the interior.
If everything cycles and all you get is ambient air blowing inside, the seal on the compressor may be bad. Way to check is find refrigerant type on decals along the front of engine compartment and match the refill kit found at auto stores and follow the directions. If you lose your "cold air" in a short time the seal is bad and have to buy a new compressor, have the lines put on a vacuum test, and recharge the system.
Maybe not the most environmentally way of testing, but at least you know what is wrong so not to get jacked by the repair shop.

Compressor is starting to seize up, when the solenoid pulls in it makes alot of noise and the engine almost dies. Still blows cold air if you keep your foot on the gas but it's not right. Gotta get it fixed before it locks up and takes the serpentine belt with it.

Might not be as bad as a whole compressor. If the compressor bearings are shot then, it's the big one because, when replacing to a new compressor, you have to change a few of the other components in the system. But if it's only the clutch you're on the down hill side in expenses.

In the mean time, pull the electrical plug off of the compressor and hope that clutch or compressor doesn't freeze up on ya because, you could lock up that clutch, get stranded, and or lose your belt too.

How many belts RM ??? Only one for AC ? Cut it off and roll windows down. Works perfect : ) : )

I turned on my AC yesterday and not much air was blowing out. Turned up the fan. I could hear the fan blowing harder but no more air was blowing. The air was cold just not much of it. I thought to check the cabin air filter. Took it out and it was soaking wet. I think the storm the other day must have caused water to,overflow into the air intake and soaked the filter. I hope your fix is as easy as mine.

Suggest to keep ( da' new ) filter out for now, run the fan and even turn on heat to let everything REALLLY dry out as open as possible. Only then drop new filter in.
Dry and blow everything out fist as the filter can 'seal' stuff in.

Negative. After the daughter went to college we sold the Jeep with non working AC.
