How we saved $$$ on airport parking - EightFingers - 09-25-2016
Went to the U.K. for three weeks and was faced with a possible $330 airport parking bill. What we did was rent a car in Hilo, drove to Kona and turned it in. When we returned, we rented a car in Kona drove back to Hilo and turned it in. Total cost for the two rentals was $115. Savings: $215.
Theoretical parking cost was $5.23/day.
Using Costco to book the rentals helped make the whole thing work.

We drove our own car to pick up the rental. I drove one car, wife drove the other back home. Put our car back in the garage. We reversed the process when we got home from our trip.

Pretty ingenious. We are coming to Hilo next month. Looking at flights and car rentals, flying to Kona is cheaper for both. Taking that 2hr drive when we land and leave will save us approximately $500, minus the cost of gas. Figure avout $30 in gas. Worth it to us...

Your car rental costs sounds like you got dinged hard with a Hilo drop-off fee? I generally pay right at $35 for a day, including taxes/fees.

We did the same thing except we rented the car in Kona for both ways. Seems the Kona airport is a lot easier to get a car with no dropoff fee.

Crazy. According to the HNL web site it costs $300/month to park a car there. $330 for 3 weeks at KOA? No wonder KOA is consistently rated in the top 10 worst airports year after year. Too bad Island Air's $20 ITO/KOA service never panned out (or was it $30? Don't remember)

I remember when it was 25$ one way, ITO/KOA. It is a no brainier. Sure wish they'd start it up again!
