How do you heat a pool? - Kelena - 11-12-2016 And who does that? Absolutely gorgeous today and yesterday seemed like the warmest day of the year. Indian summer. But the pool is going to start getting to cool for comfort here real soon. Do any punawebbers have a heated pool? How'd you do that? Is there a solar option? RE: How do you heat a pool? - Carey - 11-12-2016 Kelena, We USED to have a lap lane pool back in N IL that we have a solar pool mat for, one mat kept the little pool nice n warm early spring to late fall (OK warm is maybe not what Jim would agree to, but I could swim) The Pahoa pool has the same type of solar mat pool heaters... far fewer per volume of water than we had & it does boost the temps a bit (your can tell when you stand on top of the water inlets on a sunny day) but I really think they do not have enough solar mats for an olympic pool.... Our old neighbor in lower HPP have a black lava tube pool that he had solar water heaters (like the house solar water heaters) that really did boost the pool temps RE: How do you heat a pool? - terracore - 11-14-2016 The literature that came with our solar hot water heater panels had a section on pool heating, so the solar answer is "yes". I looked for, but could not find the literature however. There are also more "off the shelf" options advertised on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Pool-Heaters-Solar-Accessories/s/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=n:3613854011,p_n_feature_three_browse-bin:3613868011&linkCode=ll2&tag=pw016-20&linkId=3c3680d410d20e9984757d891282f8ca RE: How do you heat a pool? - Tink - 11-15-2016 My family has tried the solar panels mounted on the roof. Downside was there was always maintenence on the rubber couplings, as they would eventually slide off one end, resulting in draining of pool if you did not catch it in time. Heating was so so. Gas heat, of course way too expensive, even on "assist". Solar blanket, basically 1/4 inch bubble wrap cut the shape of the pool, seemed to work best on heat. Got warm enough it felt like a bath tub. Leaves and surface debris was easy cleanup as you could brush to middle of cover before removal, then scoop out. Downside was rolling it off of the pool surface at "sun up", then rolling back over at "sun down". Just use hose clamps to make sure you get a good seal. The solar blanket is also a great idea. Me ka ha`aha`a, Mike RE: How do you heat a pool? - Kelena - 11-15-2016 Okay, thanks everyone. I guess what I was wondering is, who do I call to come out and make it so? Wateworks? Keoni's Kona Pool Supply? Jim the Carpenter? I don't trust myself crawling around on the roof. RE: How do you heat a pool? - Carey - 11-15-2016 Kelena, we didn`t install ours on the roof in IL, as we brought it in so it would not freeze in the winter Our mat was easy to install into the water system & we mounted it on a frame we built off our deck (really simple construction...) The one for our mini lap pool was like this, but only 10ft long: https://www.amazon.com/Inground-Above-Ground-Solar-Heater/dp/B010C7OKZG/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1479285148&sr=8-6&keywords=solar+pool+heater Home Depot has this that you can probably order & looks super easy- just set it out somewhere (looks like $55 for shipping to Kea`au): http://www.homedepot.com/p/Palram-Solar-Above-Ground-AquaDome-Grand-Pool-Heater-701708/206291064?cm_mmc=Shopping%7CTHD%7CG%7C0%7CG-BASE-PLA-D22-BuildingMaterials%7C&gclid=CIj34I3trNACFcNhfgodrfMKow&gclsrc=aw.ds RE: How do you heat a pool? - Kelena - 11-16-2016 Well, it looks like I would need twelve of those HD thingys to heat the pool although probably fewer in Hawaii than Chicago. Might be worth a try. But I am not a good DIY'er although I am better than when I moved here! It is kind of like cooking though -- I used to tell people I can't cook. But the truth is I don't want to. We will just keep that between Punawebbers. Isn't there SOMEONE on island who handles pool issues like this? RE: How do you heat a pool? - Carey - 11-16-2016 There WAS, as our old lava tube owning neighbor used a guy...something like `Paul, the pool guy` Have you checked any of the ones listed in this old Punaweb thread? http://www.punaweb.org/forum/pop_printer_friendly.asp?TOPIC_ID=11418 RE: How do you heat a pool? - terracore - 11-16-2016 quote: Drainpipe did out solar hot water.
