no alternate routes... - kalakoa - 12-02-2016

http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/news/local-news/flooding-causes-road-closures

the entrance to the Eden Roc subdivision in Puna is closed due to flooding. Motorists are advised to detour using Uahi Road in the Kapua Farm Lots subdivision

I guess the people at the newspaper can't be bothered to check maps: Uahi road doesn't connect to Eden Roc.

Excellent example of why we need alternate routes. Seems somewhat more important than, say, building a park, or remodeling a golf course.

But there is no kickback on roads

But there is no kickback on roads

In theory, better access makes properties more valuable, resulting in higher property tax revenue.

In theory, yes, but in practice we can only surmise that the park building contractors paid better "campaign contributions" than the road repair contractors. Hence we got parks that some communities didn't want and roads that are cratered . . . and that's in Hilo, not some godforsaken Puna subdivision.

I surmise the golf course and hotel contributed a bit...

Uahi does connect to Eden Roc, albeit not directly. It runs between Apele and Waimaka O Pele Roads in Kopua Farmlots. Apele and Waimaka O Pele are both accessible from Kahikopele, and span that section of Kahikopele which is prone to flooding.

The "news" article refers to an "entrance to Eden Roc", apparently that "entrance" is actually in Kopua Farm Lots.

Meanwhile, there are two other roads platted from the highway to Eden Roc -- too bad there's no money to actually open them.

Perhaps we can convince Council to approve some very long basketball courts, which would be easily funded as a "park".

It's also possible with some equipment to open up a route from Eden Roc through to Fern Forest at 17 road, but usually this kind of flooding is short lived.

Me ka ha`aha`a,
Mike
