Crime in Pahoa - jensurf47 - 12-04-2016

Greetings! My hubby and I are buying a lot in Leilani Estates and plan on building there in a couple of years. We are very excited but last night we spoke to a some people who are familiar with the area and were raised on the Big Island and they warned us not to do so. They made it sound like Pahoa town/ Puna district is a lawless land of meth and violent crime and that people are fleeing because it's so bad. I would love to hear the perspective from someone who is actually living there now. We aren't looking for some fancy resort life. I am a registered nurse and I work really hard and will still be working when we relocate. We are looking to simplify our lives and live green and surf and spread aloha to others. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

You might want to check out the Big Island Thieves Facebook page for some insight. Petty thievery is pretty common, violent crime tends to be personal here, rather than directed towards strangers unless you end up in the wrong place at the wrong time. Most people have fences and locked gates, dogs are the favored security system as is knowing your neighbors. The Pahoa Police can give you a breakdown of crimes in each subdivision, the Leilani Estates Neighborhood Watch may be able to help too.

As I understand it, Pahoa used to be pretty bad, but it certainly hasn't been that way for a long time now.
I don't hear many bad things about Leilani either. You'll be fine.

Thank you all for the info! I kind of have my heart set on being a Punatic and so does the hubs so we are happy for the feedback. Super stoked to join the community Smile Aloha!

There are good areas and bad areas within Leilani. This varies a lot from street to street. Do not buy any property, even in Leilani, without a thorough check of the neighboring houses. I strongly advise renting for at least 6 months, as close to where you want to buy.

Will you be working as an RN in Hilo? If so, the commute from Leilani isn't going to pleasant.

RE: Crime in Pahoa - jensurf47 - 12-04-2016

Thank you Leilani dude. What we are planning to do is to put our stuff in storage here and live in the area for a year before we build a house or set down permanent roots - going to try it out first. Yes I will be working in Hilo but I live in a very congested area of southern california and spend 45 minutes on the freeway to go 8 miles for my commute at this point. As a nurse I will work three 12 hour shifts per week so I won't be doing it that often. We are considering buying in Hilo instead so we are going to scout it out first.

Puna District is huge. It's the size of Oahu, which is large enough to be comprised of high end residential areas as well as places Dog the Bounty Hunter finds his bail jumpers. Puna too has the good and the not so good.

Leilani is a fairly nice area but as leilanidude pointed out, there are differences even within individual neighborhoods. I've lived in Puna for 17 years. I have no plans to flee.

Leilani is in lava zone 1. It's not only at risk of being in the path of lava, it's also at risk of being cut off from the rest of the island if it doesn't take a direct hit. It's also in a rift zone capable of erupting itself. Getting financing and insurance in LZ 1 is different than what you are used to. Be sure you check into what that means before putting any money down. If there is another insurance moratorium you will only be able to sell your home to 100% cash buyers.

You might want to check out the 2014 emergency lava forum and read the posts from people in Leilani. I don't remember them very well but I seem to remember complaints about air quality when the vog combined with the lava gasses and the smoke from the burning forest.

It's a big island, don't settle on one spot until you've spent some time here. We've owned in two neighborhoods and lived in a third. Orchidland was the winner for us.
