75% more deaths - PaulW - 12-19-2016 I received a BI police email today stating that DUI arrests have gone up 1% while traffic deaths have gone up over 75%. In one year! Anyone know why? I have a theory but I'm interested to see what others suggest. Drive safely! RE: 75% more deaths - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 12-19-2016 What is the actual number of traffic deaths for the two years that were compared? By the police and the public. Lack of repercussions... if you get a DUI.. it's no big deal in the courts eyes. Lack of respect for other drivers. Lack of traffic control where it needs to be. RE: 75% more deaths - Lodestone - 12-19-2016 I'm going with texting while driving, along with some random variance due to small sample size. RE: 75% more deaths - leilanidude - 12-19-2016 Did they list the number of deaths that involved DUI drivers? How about drug use? If not, there is no correlation. RE: 75% more deaths - Obie - 12-19-2016 Hawaii County DUI penalties : Minimum bail for release from jail—$500 Installation of interlock system—$200 plus $92.56 per month Suspended driver license Possible cancellation of insurance policy or a premium increase of up to $100 per month Alcohol assessment classes Community service Court fines Possible jail time RE: 75% more deaths - birdmove - 12-19-2016 Drove over the Saddle Road this morning, Hilo to Kona area, and saw three cops ticketing speeders. This. on the downhill part going toward Kona. The big island has more bumper huggers, people that dart in and out of lanes to try to gain a few seconds, and drivers that seem to not understand what a turn signal is But, when it comes to trying to get into a jammed lane or road, some of the most courteous as far as letting someone in. Doesn't matter how fast you are driving, someone will deem it not fast enough and ride your bumper. Very irritating, especially at night. Oh yeah, then there are the midnight and latter Jacky Stewarts out in HPP doing burnouts, and making sure they wake everyone up. Motorcyclists do this too. Not this one. Been riding for 55 years, and never rode like that. That's why I've never been in a street motorcycle accident. Jon in Keaau/HPP RE: 75% more deaths - Mr nice guy - 12-19-2016 Would have to look at all the data. When I see such a large spike in % like that the first thing I suspect is that we are dealing with very few deaths. For instance: So far this year, there have been 25 fatal crashes on Hawai#699;i Island (five of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 30 fatalities, compared with 14 fatal crashes (two of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 17 fatalities during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 78.6 percent for fatal crashes and 76.5 percent for fatalities. For an excersize try this: Count each collision resulting in a fatality or multiple fatalities as one and then compare years again. |
