Raccoons in Hawaii? - msrocket - 12-29-2016 A friend found what appears to be a dead raccoon. Although it is decomposed, it definitely is not a domestic cat. Has anyone ever heard of a raccoon here, or have any idea what this critter might be? RE: Raccoons in Hawaii? - Slow Walker - 12-29-2016 Having lived here for some time it sounds like it is most likely a board of director of one of the subdivisions. I saw one like that back in the year of our Lord 1981. They are always squirming about causing trouble in the bush. That one must have gotten lost. Just toss it in the roadway. RE: Raccoons in Hawaii? - caveat emptor - 12-30-2016 Slow Walker you're right, but there is another variety of f.o.r.d. here in HPP. That variety is the skunk, they look very similar to a flattened raccoon and unfortunately (for us) they are easy to distinguish from their fellow director... they smell bad! However, that smell can be of benefit when in the bush; you may be able to smell them first and run the opposite direction. Msrocket, I doubt very seriously that your friend found a raccoon. They are known to be a decent swimmer, but I'm pretty sure one couldn't have made it this far out[] RE: Raccoons in Hawaii? - terracore - 12-30-2016 If its not a dog or cat, could it be a pig? You can tell by looking at the teeth but bear in mind that if it was a smuggled in pet raccoon, they might have had their canines removed. The state veterinarian does necropsies of suspicious animals for free. Someone would have to take it to their office in the state office building. If it was a raccoon they would probably want to know what the cause of death was to know if potentially it could be patient zero for some horrible new Big Island plague. RE: Raccoons in Hawaii? - msrocket - 12-30-2016 It sure doesn't look like a pig or dog to me. I will see if I can find a way to post a link to a picture. RE: Raccoons in Hawaii? - msrocket - 12-30-2016 Maybe this link will work? https://www.flickr.com/photos/86288698@N07/ RE: Raccoons in Hawaii? - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 12-30-2016 Cat. A raccoon and most breeds of dogs have longer, more pointed snouts.
