Shipping cargo trailer? - BigEyePuna - 01-05-2017

I'll be moving to Volcano in April and I've come to the million dollar question of whether it will be worth it to ship my 5X8 enclosed cargo trailer or sell it and buy a new one there. I have customized it a bit (paint, upgraded floor, shelves, etc.)so the overall value of it is around $3,000, minus one year depreciation. I'd use it for my business when I'm there and if I ship it I will stuff it full of household goods. Otherwise, I sell everything I own and just come over with a couple of suitcases and maybe ship just a few things with a PODS like company (although I know PODS doesn't go to the Big Island). Any advise out there from those of you who have already gone through this dilemma? Also, are there any restrictions on shipping a cargo trailer inside a 20' shipping container declared as "household goods"?

It was going to cost 3,700.00 to ship my pop up camper from the west coast. I sold it and used the money to pay for the rough plumbing on our house.

You might want to look into whether you can "stuff it full of household goods." You can't put ANYTHING in a car or truck, so there might be issues with that. Also, I don't think there are ANY companies like PODS that come to the Big Island. As to your trailer inside a container question: someone told me when they moved here a year ago that they couldn't put their car in their container, so I'm guessing there are similar rules re: trailers. But who knows? A freight forwarding company could answer all your questions.

All I know is, what we left behind, we wished we had brought; and what we brought, we wished we had left behind! Sorry couldn't be more help.

I'd check with the shipping company personally..rules tend to change over the years.

This is decade old, but when we removed, it woulda been close to $4K to ship our 4x8 enclosed trailer....& at that time, it had to be empty...
Had we thought about it & moved more of our stuff, it might have been worth shipping it in a container, but at that time there were some "oh it has to be empty there, too" statements from the SHIPPING companies...have since heard of those who have placed it & loaded it (bear in mind you will need to get it onto & off of the container... so..)

Anyhoo we did not move it, you can buy enclosed trailers here (Lowes Kona has had them, but not now, at least not on their website..) & Troys usually does...& there are some on Craigslist at times...so you would need to do the math to see it it is better for you to pay to ship or sell it where you are & buy here

Craigslist (choose the island- but shipping inter island is WAY less $$$)):

I had a nice trailer that I bought a few years ago. The yearly tax made me sell it. Wasn't worth it. If you are going to use it and take it on the road a lot it may be worth it. But for me it was just more yearly expense that I didn't need. And it was a hassle to park when I did take it out.

If you are worried about it. Load it up in a container. Pull the axles off and call it trailer parts. You still need to do the math and research to determine it's value to you. Only you can make that call

RE: Shipping cargo trailer? - BigEyePuna - 01-05-2017

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions! I really like onrway's idea to call it trailer parts. I was thinking something like that myself earlier but the best I could come up with was calling it a "wagon". Matson's website says it is OK to ship vehicles, boats, etc. but for an additional fee. I'm not sure how much that would be.

The issue with putting items in a car or truck is that it invites theft. Putting a vehicle in a container results in making the container a bomb, as gasoline fumes will accumulate inside the mostly airtight container where one load shift causing a spark leads to catastrophic results that a shipping company can not afford. Check with your shipper on what restrictions they put on your freight, and find a solution that makes both parties happy.

call mason with dimensions especially height and ask for "roll on roll off" we shipped our smaller boat on its trailer and it wasn't bad at all. the height seems to matter the most... it also seems that someone posted pasha let them put stuff in their car but don't know if they do roll on and off. trailers are pretty pricey here by the way...
