Hicop.org needs your help! - Ino - 01-15-2017

HICoP.org is an organization that's trying to find a balance for tour helicopters and the residents who live here. Please go to http://hicop.org/ and watch the KMBG news story on our efforts.

In the state of Hawaii noise regulations (with a potential fine of $11K per violation) are in effect:
before 7am and after 6pm M-F
before 9am and after 6pm Saturday
All day Sunday

Just last week we had 3 over flights before 7 am. The helicopter companies claim they do not fly before 8 am.

We are encouraged that we might get help from the State of Hawaii Environmental Health Services Division ( they deal with environmental noise abatement);
http://health.hawaii.gov/about/links-to-doh-program-information/environmental-health-administration/

They also have a petition before them from a person that lives in Kalapana

This dept is soliciting e-mails from people who suffer health effects from this situation. If you suffer, Please write an e-mail to;

James Toma, Noise Section Supervisor.

Mahalo!

Here is a sample email; edit as you wish and include YOUR experiences with helicopter noise

To Whom It May Concern:
I wish to lodge a formal complaint with the Hawaii Department of Health's Indoor and Radiological Health Branch due to excessive noise from helicopter over flights.

As the Transportation Research Record 1475 (Analysis of Rural Community Perceptions of Helicopter Noise) notes, 4 flights per day is the threshold of tolerance for residents of the Big Island. In many cases here, there are 4 over flights within 5 minutes, and many, many more in a single day.

If there is low cloud cover, flights continue at a lower elevation which only intensifies the noise. Helicopters can be heard throughout my home at all hours of the day with no ability to escape. My backyard has been rendered unusable because the tranquility is stolen from me daily.

There is no reprieve from the constant bombardment of rotor noise. I ask that the Hawaii Department of Health investigate helicopter tour noise emissions ( helicopters use leaded fuel ) and advise what can be done so I can get my health back and find serenity once again within my home.
Sincerely,
(Resident)

hypochondriacs of Puna,.. you ALL need to get a life!!

quite exaggerating everything just so your point seems legit.. you moved here knowing that a few copters will be flying overhead.

Ino, heres a Question for you...
per ..."""Transportation Research Record 1475"""
...show me where they note ..."'''4 flights per day is the threshold of tolerance for residents of the Big Island.""""

heres the link to this 26 yr old study...

Mahalo! to Yurtgirl and Lee M-S

We appreciate your support. The helicopter lobby is very strong. We need everyone so inclined to stand up now! Our health dept. just might be able to help!

C'mon BH, PTSD and OCD are serious conditions that can be triggered by loud repetetive noises. Even without these conditions one can get pretty sick of these copters that congest our air space and do nothing for the community. They should at very minimum be mandated to provide vouchers to residents in the flight path so we aren't excluded from the spectacles reserved for the rich. They should also be mandated to provide some sort of community service....the constant chopper noise does significantly impact quality of life. If you own livestock it is actually illegal for the whirly birds to fly too low.

Not to mention drones....anybody else had snoopy drones fly too low over their homes? Was informed that they could be from realtors or rippers. Either way, if one were to somehow "fall" on your property while snooping, it would become your property. Slingshots ready...lol!

The state's noise regulations don't apply to aircraft !

Wouldn't that... increase the number of flights & create even more noise?
