Engine warning light? - onrway - 01-20-2017
Does anyone know if a vehicle with a check engine light will still pass safety inspection? Vehicle runs fine.

It should. My engine light has been on for over 5 years, and it's passed inspection every time.
You usually don't have to have the vehicle running while it's safety checked, so the inspector shouldn't notice the light.

If your worried about it... just disconnect the battery terminals for about 30 minutes and then reattach them. The engine light stays off for a couple of days before it returns. And I also went through inspection with the light on.

Yes. Mine has passed the last 6 years with a constant CEL (check engine light) illuminated.

In my experiences with the check engine light the problem is a "minor emissions control" fault, better simplified as a bad, or not screwed down gas cap. The cap doesn't seal the tank, allowing vapors to escape, and the computer picks it up when it applies back pressure to your gas tank.
Either buy a new cap, or lightly coat the cap gasket with grease to make a seal, disconnect battery and re connect to reset light, and see if the light comes back on. If you did the grease thing and the light stays off, replace the cap. Some auto parts stores will read the code for you if you really are curious.

You can get a code reader on ebay pretty cheap; that lets you not only read the code, but reset it so the light goes out--at least for a while. Some auto parts store will loan you the reader. Look the code up online or in the booklet.
Repair guy told me if the light is steady, get it checked out sometime; if it's flashing, do it right away.

No problem on the Big Island, only places that require emission control standards, like LA or San Fran. I've had mine pass on Kuaui, Maui, and here. It's an emission issue, not a safety issue.

If is just engine lights and not brake lights or seatbelt light it will pass. I like to know where they don't start you car the last 3 inspection I had they got in the car and drove them to check brakes. The first time they did it I ask why they said they got busted and it is part of the test and they have do it now.
