Firearms incident in HPP - Jan 26th - TomK - 01-26-2017

Does anyone have any more info on this? I'm baffled by the Nixle email I received today:

"Hawai'i Island police are investigating a firearms incident initially reported as “gunshots fired” in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision in lower Puna.

Responding officers contacted a group of individuals near the area where the shots were reported, although the preliminary investigation has thus far indicated that no shots were fired.

Someone reported gunshots so presumably heard something that sounded like gunshots, the police say there were no gunshots, but it's being investigated as a "firearms incident".

(Edited to remove a control character from the quote)

PS. Just to add, since the alert didn't actually say when (or precisely where) the incident occurred, it just adds to the confusion. I'm just assuming it was today (Jan 26th) given the date the alert was sent.

Can't find it right now, but on a Facebook page dedicated to the area, a gent said there were gun shots, or a gun shot near 3rd, or 4th and Makuu. He said he was working outside and someone in a group of people fired. I'll keep looking and update if I can find it.

Similar lack of detail in our Fine Local "News" Media:

http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/news/local-news/police-investigating-hpp-gunfire-report

"gunshots fired" in Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision

HPP is only, what, about 14 square miles? "Somewhere in there."

Not the message I read where a gent was very close to the gun shot)s), but a quote from a lady from 20 hours ago on Facebook:

"Be careful everyone.
Makuu and 4th shots fired! (Just over the scanner.)
Male suspect (Westly Brooks) with Ak 47. Black pick-up with trailer and Motorcycle in the back."

I believe it was 4th and Makuu, it was originally claimed as an AK47, then the police said it was a handgun. So who knows.

Well crap, that's a little too close for comfort. (3rd & Maku'u here.) And AK47? Scary! There had been lots of shots fired down the street a few months ago, but the people have since left. This does not make me happy.

Sidenote: not sure why HPD continually gives vague info on locations. it drives me nuts that thefts, etc., are described as "at a business on Maka'ala St in Hilo." Uh, there are what, 40 or 50 businesses on Maka'ala? If it ain't safe in the Target parking lot, I want to know.

RE: Firearms incident in HPP - Jan 26th - TomK - 01-27-2017

This is the latest from Nixle. It's still confusing but at least I understand why they called it a firearms incident:

https://local.nixle.com/alert/5836665/?sub_id=344108

"East Hawai'i detectives arrested a 50-year-old Hakalau man late Thursday afternoon (January 26) as part of their investigation into a firearms incident earlier in the day in Puna.

John Rodrigues Jr. was arrested on suspicion of three counts of first-degree terroristic threatening and six firearms violations. After conferring with prosecutors, police released Rodrigues pending further investigation.

Initially reported as “gunshots fired” in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision in lower Puna at approximately 10 a.m., responding officers contacted a group of individuals near where the shots were reported and were able to determine that no shots had been fired, although firearms were involved in a confrontation.

Thanks for the post TomK, but this nixle alert makes no sense.

Someone who was taking a shower in a house on 3rd and Maku'u heard gunshots. I know this person, they are a vet from a long line of career military who knows what a gun sounds like. How the heck could an incident that involved firearms, but no shots fired, be heard from a shower inside a house?

"a vet from a long line of career military who knows what a gun sounds like."

I can top that. I've lived in Puna for 35 years.
