Alt Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 01-27-2017

As you may have heard, many national parks have started alternate twitter accounts, as their official accounts can no longer be used without prior oversight and approval. Volcanoes National Park is a big part of Puna, and what happens there probably in one way or another affects us all. Here's the twitter page for Alt Hawaii Volcanoes National Park:

https://twitter.com/AltVolcanoes_NP

There are tweets from park rangers, park visitors, with updates on legislation that will affect them.

PLEASE: If you have any comments about the EPA, cabinet posts, or the like, make certain they connect in some way directly to our local park, our friends and neighbors the park rangers, park hours, or other access concerns for residents of Puna, and Hawaii Island.

Well. One quick look at that twitter feed shows how political it is! What a disgrace to the National Park Service. They weren't able to take the high road? I guess that sums up why the official accounts were asked to stop.

RE: Alt Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 01-27-2017

why the official accounts were asked to stop.

The official accounts were censored, plain and simple.
They are on longer allowed to post publicly funded, scientifically gathered studies and findings, without, as you point out, politically motivated oversight and approval.

The Alt National Park movement is an attempt the keep the public, both us and U.S., in our national parks, and keep out meddling politicians.

Support Volcanoes National Park here in Puna, the people who work there, and the visitors who come to our island to see the lava flow.

RE: Alt Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - leilanidude - 01-27-2017

Why aren't they posting anything about the park itself then, instead of vile political stuff? Wouldn't that be the thing to do if they are supposed to be "keeping the public informed"? If they were posting things like, "parking lot is full at Thurston Lava Tube", that would be appropriate, don't you think?

RE: Alt Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - Lodestone - 01-27-2017

Well, when feeling obliged to create an alt account, the first topic of conversation is inevitably going to be WHY they created the account, yes? Maybe we'll get something about the parking lot eventually. Is this a result of the Donald being angry about the crowd count at his inauguration?

ETA: Never mind, I read the twitter posts. It's about that AND being instructed to remove the climate change webpages at other government websites. Well, regardless of how you feel about climate change, censorship of data is bad, no?

The real account.

Interesting that it is full of posts about how nice the day is and things like that (going back before the so-called censor) I scrolled back into October and didn't see any "scientific findings" or such being posted. So what is the fuss now if they weren't doing it before, other than some whiny folks who didn't get their way on the election.

A federal hiring freeze has been instituted by executive action (without congressional approval) which if allowed to stand could affect Volcanoes National Park in the same way government sequestration did three years ago, with limited park hours and access.

Retweeted by Alt Volcanoes NP:

... government-wide hiring freeze will devastate the nation’s public lands, including the National Park System, which is already overburdened with record attendance and staff shortages. The freeze is a nightmare scenario for the NPS and Bureau of Land Management, which is also understaffed.

The last time NPS was affected by budget-wide cuts, during the 2013 budget sequestration, “we saw closed facilities, reduced hours, park roads weren’t opening, visitor center doors were closed when visitors went there,” Garder added.

RE: Alt Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - PunaMauka2 - 01-30-2017

This topic most definitely does/will affect many in the Puna community. The National Park and the abundant scientific research hosted within is obviously about so much more than monitoring and reporting parking availability. Sweeping censorship of publicly funded research by an incoming federal administration for reactionary political purposes - no good, to put it mildly.
