Stomach flu or food poisoning? - Kapoho Joe - 03-01-2017 Just working through my symptoms here and am wondering if there is a stomach flu going around or did I get some bad food? Anyone? RE: Stomach flu or food poisoning? - Kenney - 03-01-2017 Sorry to hear you're ill. KJ. We had a pretty mean stomach bug in November, but I haven't heard anybody complain of stomach ailments of late.. My partner barfed for a week but not constantly. I never did, but sure felt like I wanted to. We didn't have much of an appetite for a couple of months. When I had food poisoning, it came on within an hour or two of eating fast food, with really acute symptoms. (Frothy north and down south. yuck) I kept saying I've been poisoned. I can't. say it's the same for everybody.. Some food borne illnesses take weeks to come on. A physician or nurse practitioner should be able to determine what's happening and help you cope with the symptoms.' There are meds that help. Either way, do everything you can to keep hydrated. Ginger tea, Passionate Punch, 7 up, water, Gatorade, whatever will stay down. My Doc told me Gatorade cut (1/2) with water is like an IV, with lots of electrolytes. I wouldn't normally recommend people drink that stuff, but we keep a jug around for fever times. Hope you feel better soon. . RE: Stomach flu or food poisoning? - Chunkster - 03-01-2017 Everybody in our house had a stomach virus early in February. We know it was a virus because one person brought it home from work where many had it, and we got it one by one and not all at once. Kenney's suggestions for hydration are spot on good advice. RE: Stomach flu or food poisoning? - Kenney - 03-01-2017 Afterthought : the perfect fluid is Coconut water. It's full of electrolytes and so tasty. RE: Stomach flu or food poisoning? - EightFingers - 03-01-2017 I started feeling a little queasy about 3:00 last Sunday. RE: Stomach flu or food poisoning? - terracore - 03-01-2017 quote: That's kind of a trick question because there isn't a clear definition between "food poisoning" and "stomach [bug, flu, virus, etc]". (Insert standard disclaimer that influenza is a respiratory illness and although its a commonly used term, there is no such thing as a "stomach flu"). Even the Mayo Clinic website lists food poisoning along with infections that aren't usually transmitted by food under the broad definition "Food Poisoning". And there are a lot of stomach illnesses that you can get from either a handrail OR a salad. All that being said, if I understand the question correctly, did you get sick from something you ate? You may never know, but if multiple people get sick from eating the same thing, they usually get sick within 2-6 hours of eating it. As I understand it, most stomach ailments aren't actually caused by something you ate, the bugs that cause them can be on surfaces or even in the air. Sometimes that surface is a food surface, so there is always overlap. That was the medical answer (disclaimer, I am not a medical professional). If I remember my restaurant days correctly, "food poisoning" was caused by food adulterated with a toxin or chemical. Botulism, for example, is a toxin excreted by bacteria. Even if you cook and kill the bacteria, the toxin remains. The botulism toxin can be destroyed by prolonged boiling (over 10 minutes), some mushroom toxins cannot be made safe by cooking. Another type of food adulteration (poisoning) example would be like if a restaurant worker added bleach or some other chemical to a recipe instead of the intended ingredient. (It happens a lot more frequently than you think). There was recently a case where child with a peanut allergy died (or almost died? I don't remember) because on the "special instructions" for the meal ticket for a grilled cheese sandwich, they put "no peanut products". English wasn't the cook's first language and mistook the instructions to mean "add peanut butter". RE: Stomach flu or food poisoning? - Wao nahele wahine - 03-01-2017 Ugh...I hope you feel better soon. I have had food poisoning several times. The first time was the most severe...I could hardly walk I was so weak from dehydration...ended up in the emergency room to get re-hydrated. My mom had the same symptoms and the only connection we could make for us having the same symptoms was we both ate the same food choice on a flight home two days before. WahineRE: Stomach flu or food poisoning? - alaskyn66 - 03-01-2017 Lots of flu bugs and other bugs going around. My wife just got out of the hospital for Double pneumonia... I currently have walking pneumonia.but won't go to the hospital until I can't breathe. Sorry.... My spellcheck is mildly RE: Stomach flu or food poisoning? - Kapoho Joe - 03-01-2017 Thanks for all the replies, I appreciate the advice and kind words. Fun, fun, fun living in our little petri dish here. Plenty of fluids and lots of rest, I'll be back to form in no time! RE: Stomach flu or food poisoning? - JG-HPP - 03-02-2017 You also might want to check your water filters. I drink a lot of water and can always tell when ours needs changing by tummy troubles. |
