It's nice when a restaurant is a pleasant surprise. When it is I want to tell people.

Honi Wai is at about the 12 mile marker on Hwy. 11.

Walk in to a nicely remodeled plantation era building. Tasteful decorating. A small set up with a guitar in a stand for live music.

A sweet gal named Tutu was our waitress. The menu was not extensive but a hot pastrami sandwich sounded like the thing. Frankly I wasn't expecting much.

When the lunch arrived it was great. Great bread, great pastrami, great cheese and it was sided with a really nice salad.

Then the live music started. At noon.

It kept on getting better and better. Try it out.

Thanks, Rob. I've passed it many times but have never stopped there. The online reviews (Yelp and Google) are excellent! It's on my list.

I did have to look up "bubble tea" though!

Honi Wai is at about the 12 mile marker on Hwy. 11.

If coming up from Keaau: Honi Wai is on the left, just past the big water tank on the right (which is just after the Dimple Cheek "permanent farm stand").

The parcel is "legacy commercial", so it only took them 2 years to get permits from County.

been there several times, always great food. and yes, the county gave her hell and that was the old tinny fisher place, the antique shop that was there for years and years and years...

Your recommendation seems to have created a surge in business; at 10:30 this morning, their tiny lot was full and cars were parked on the shoulder of the highway.

Of course, the customers might have been drivers taking a break from the horrendous backup caused by roadwork further down the highway.

Great gourmet food.
Live music.
We left a $20 tip.
The best of the best in Puna .
Friendly staff.
The attention to detail is how all small businesses will survive.
Family run .
We will donate very soon some of our organic produce.
