anybody try container growing peanuts? - terracore - 04-01-2017

With the success of our 100 gallon container gardens and 10 gallon container potatoes and corn, our new experiment is container peanuts.

Anybody grow peanuts before, and have experiences to share?

I have a neighbor who bought some raw peanuts from a farmers' market and threw some into a container/planter and the plants look good, but have not produced yet (not enough time has passed). She gave me some and I have done the same. I have a couple of sprouts after just two days. I would love to successfully grow peanuts and will keep all posted. Please do the same.

Will do. We are trying to grow 2 different kinds. Just planted them yesterday.

I have a few flowers. We will see what happens with them.

Nice. Have you fertilized them? As I understand the literature, they are a nitrogen fixer so you don't want to give them any of that but they still like to be fed.

The peanut germination rate is an amazing 100% and they sprout right away.

I did not get 100% germination, but maybe 80%. Of course I planted peanuts that were meant to be eaten. I have not fertilized because, A) I keep forgetting to fertilize anything (I've now added it to my calendar), and B) They are part of an experiment with natural soil (under ages old mango trees) we brought home from another lot we own.

Our peanuts (terracore and I) were from a parrot food mix. So I have no idea how old they are, but I guess that means they are not that old and not treated which makes me happy in regards to my parrot food!

The neighbor who gave me the raw peanuts has some actual peanuts! My plants look good but have not produced anything edible yet.

We harvested our first experimental container peanuts today!

We haven't counted them up yet, but the experiment seems to be a success. I did see many still-developing peanuts which might indicate we should have waited longer to harvest, but an experiment is an experiment. They are now in the drying phase so we can have peanuts about a month from now.

I pulled up one of my plants about 2 weeks ago. It had maybe 4 or 5 fully developed peanuts and a few that were teeny-tiny. I've left the rest of the plants to develop further. I boiled my peanuts and they were yummy. Since this first try went/is going okay I've spent the time and energy to build a larger raised bed specifically for peanuts.
