fridge - Hunt Stoddard - 04-23-2017

Anyone have advice on best fridge/where to buy? I've heard to stay away from LG and Samsung.

The next fridge I buy will be an "inverter" type. The salient point is that the compressor is not cycled on and off but instead runs continuously with the speed being controlled to match demand for cooling. I have NOT heard anything about keeping away from LG or Samsung.

Yes, stay away from LG!
We got one from Home Depot about 3 years ago and it stopped defrosting about a year later. The independent repair guy that has worked on our other fridges says the only service is from Sears. An inexpensive Amana also crapped out - from Home Depot.
We have had no problems with Kenmore and Whirlpool from Sears

Avoid LG! I had one that was nothing but trouble. A Home Depot employee even told me that they joke about how bad they are and how many people bring back LG appliances of all types.

We had an LG stainless steel microwave. It started rusting after about 3 months. The microwave stopped working literally almost a day after the 1 year warranty expired. It was eerie like there is a timer built inside that causes a self destruct.

I almost bought a Samsung microwave to replace it, then I went online and read the reviews HOLY SMOKES do people hate Samsung appliances. Pretty to look at but the guts are junk.

Our Whirlpool dishwasher lasted less than 3 months before the wash pump went out.

We have 3 GE appliances. One of them needed a push-button switch repaired after about a year. Other than that they have been running without incident for about 5 years.

Based on what I've bought in the last 5 years, I would stick with GE.

Don't buy from Lowes.

If you can't afford an extended warranty, buy a less expensive appliance that you can afford the warranty on.

Our repair guy told us modern appliances are junk and only expected to last as long as the warranty is. My dad's fridge is about 30 years old and it's never had a repair, they literally don't make them like that any more.

well, as usual, if you want the "BEST" efficient fridge, talk to stone cold in hawaiian beaches.

Or if you don't have $2000 to spend on a fridge, use one of these or something similar to turn a chest freezer into a refrigerator. Chest freezers use a fraction of the electricity a refrigerator uses to keep food cold:

https://www.amazon.com/Inkbird-Temperature-Controller-Thermostat-Fermentation/dp/B015E2UFGM/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1493392836&sr=8-1&keywords=freezer+temperature+controller&linkCode=ll1&tag=pw016-20&linkId=0c0aceaf58c4d71a5828476851862406

You can get a reliable chest freezer for around ~$220, then another $35 for the converter probe thing, probably pays for itself (compared to using a standard refrigerator) it's first year. Lots of people on solar using chest freezers in this manner.

Can anyone recommend igloo vs magic chef vs arctic king etc? Seems amazon won't ship any of em here, so something local or through walmart?

RE: fridge - kalakoa - 04-28-2017

I have a Magic Chef mini ("dorm") fridge from Walmart and a (small, 5 cu ft) GE chest freezer from Home Depot. Price around $200.

Many years of service, even with modified sine AC from a cheap inverter.

The DC fridges sold at "off grid" stores are supposedly higher build quality, with thicker insulation, and much more efficient; some (most? all?) of them can be wired directly to a solar panel without batteries or charge controller. They're much more expensive (around $1500), but the simplicity can be worth it in some cases.

My dad's fridge is about 30 years old

My fridge came with the house when I bought it 17 years ago. It looked like it was 10-15 years old at that time, so 25-30 years old now. I've replaced the circulation fan once, about $35.
