shipping a container from mainland? - jumpsalot - 05-12-2017

I am considering renting or buying a container in San Francisco and having it shipped to Hilo. I don't have a whole lot to send from the mainland so I would like to share a container with someone else. (What I most want to ship are kayaks and surfboards, and it would be difficult or impossible to fit them on a pallet). Anyone want to do that? Or, I guess I could buy a bunch of building materials and have the container filled up that way, then sell the building materials in Hawaii. Anyone got any advice? Thanks!

Talk to Hawaiian Express. They should be fully capable of handling some kayaks and surfboards.

Might also check Oakland and SF Craig's list. There are occasional postings for shared container.Be sure to look in the Ride share listings.

Interestingly, just in the last week I've been looking at getting a partial container, but we don't have very much either. We'd be shipping some stuff from San Diego, so we'd have to figure out how to get it up to Oakland.

I'm sure you've already done the research but just in case-

You said you were renting or buying a container in San Francisco. If you are getting your container from the barge company and they understand that you intend to ship it, none of this info is relevant, but many of the containers that are for sale are for sale because they are no longer seaworthy. Every container needs a current/valid engineer's certificate or else no barge company will ship it.

I have a few things I need shipped from San Diego to Hilo myself Justin...what I have wouldn't fit half a container.

Thanks for this. I regret to say I am really bad at research . . . my eyes tend to glaze over. So your info is greatly appreciated!

Don't they ship out of San Diego?
