End of the drought? - ElysianWort - 07-29-2017

So this years dry period started in January and has lasted up till now in Puna. I know we're still way under the rainfall average. Last year the wetness seemed to come in May. This year it appears to be late July? I wonder if the dry trend is over?
When I was a kid growing up here in the 80's, there was often rainy nights and sunny days. Or just days with mixed rain and sunshine. Nowadays it seems to be more of a pattern. Rainy or sunny and not much in between.

Less rain, unfortunately thing. Spend a fair amount of time carrying water to plants. Whew.

Yeah, glad the rain is back! Ino called it, he said mid-July in another thread...

Blame the rain on "active hurricane season."

Has it been dry for you? I've been in Discovery Harbor in Ka'u for two months now, and it has been cloudy 90% of the time, and it rains on average about 3-4 times a week, sometimes so hard it torrents down in a sheet of water. I keep wanting to go to the beach, but every single time I've went, it's been so cloudy I can't really see the color of the water. I've gone to Kahalu'u, Magic Sands, and Ho'okena. It's kind of a bummer, I was expecting a lot more sunshine, I'm just praying that its this particular time of year. The reason it bothers me is Hawai'i is spectacularly beautiful when the sun is shining, I can walk for miles and miles and just enjoy it because how pretty it all is. When it's heavily overcast with no rain all those tropical colors don't shine through and it's a real shame.

update: apparently the cloudiness has been caused by the Fujihara effect of two cyclones combining, as well as a third cyclone.

Aloha Smile

The rain we got Fri/Sat came from the low-level remnants of Greg. Hilary and Irwin did indeed interact (Fujiwhara effect) but their low-level clouds are too far away to have caused the recent weather.

Nope, winter is typically wetter. Scroll down to the climate section.

Until this past week, Puna hadn't experienced a soaking rain in months.

Yesterday and today feels like that same drought weather again. Hot and dry with Kona winds. Interesting.
I hear ya Mark. Sometimes twice a day. Rewarding but definitely time consuming.

When the trades are weak or stop, it's dry in Puna and there's more convection rainfall in Kau and mid-elevation Kona.
