Seeing how ineffective our police are at reducing property crime I am an advocate of using tracking devices placed in personal property or vehicles to locate the stolen items and hopefully result in an arrest and conviction.
Here is a cheap tracking device that's the size of a quarter and has a one year battery life. It is worth $29? Buy ten and they are $12 each. That's cheap as dirt compared to the losses a burglar can inflict.
Put one in your car, computer, appliances, power tools.

The only issue I see with this particular tracker is the very limited range of 100 feet. I'm not sure it'll help with stolen items, especially in a relatively sparsely populated place like the Big Island. You would have to rely on an awful lot of people using the same system to help out so that the chances increase of someone coming within a hundred feet detects the tracker.

That is true. The more people using them the better it works. There are more expensive systems.
But at a minimum: I lost one set of keys and it cost me $200 just to replace the coded car opener/alarm.

One other thought. Since the police are probably the most traveled people in Puna, they could all be asked to have the app on their phones. If they pass near a stolen item you would get automatically notified.

What do you think?
If the police are ineffective at reducing crime,what makes you think having a tracking device will help to make them effective?
They might just think you are stepping on their toes.
When they dont respond to a certain crime then what will you do?

This is the one I used a few years ago. It's cheaper now, and claims free activation. I'm not sure if that means no monthly fee. They also say you can negotiate a lower price with multi-unit orders.
It worked very well. Would have located the thief if he had taken the item it was hidden in.

it uses Verizon as the carrier. If there is no cell reception in the area where the device gets relocated to, it won't track anything.
