HICoP Rally Saturday Sept. 9th 6-8 pm - Ino - 09-06-2017
Hawaii Island Coalition Malama Pono (HICOP) will be holding a Rally at the Keaau Elementary School for the general public. The purpose will be to meet everyone involved in this ongoing effort to establish the Hawaii Island Offshore Helicopter Route ( HIOHR ).
Many of our local representatives will be in attendance to answer your questions. After 30 + years of tour helicopter noise over our communities it’s time we take back our skies and restore SERENITY to Hawaii Island free from tour helicopter noise!
At the Rally there will be;
Free Food- Pupus and Drinks.
We will discuss the Status of Lawsuits, Candidate Support, Offshore Route,
Talk w/Representatives, Future Scheduled Events and Ongoing Efforts.

Once heard that helicopters by law/ordinance must be equipped to land on water to fly over water and our tour helicopters are not so fitted. Any truth to that?
Why have our elected representatives not taken care of us with this issue instead of forcing a likely ineffective protest?
It's always follow the money.
Once in a while there is a slight benefit in being old and hard of hearing. Frogs, toads, roosters, helicopters don't offend so much any more. Just take out hearing aids.

It is true, many do not have flotation and would rather crash into your house, school, business than land in the water. A teenager died on Oahu recently because the helicopter did not have flotation and it landed in the water and the boy drowned. It just a matter of time until someone on the ground gets killed or hurt here. Someone wrote in they’re like flying missiles and when they fly low, they are not flying with enough glide ratio to land safely in an emergency and they know it.
The late Senator Patsy Mink said it best under oath after she tried to fix this 24 years ago with HR 1696;
“One of the things that came to light as a result of the accident a few days ago in Hawaii is that flotation devices are not required for these tour operators.
And it seems to me that the first requirement that we should make for the safety of the persons who are using this industry is that all helicopters used for passenger carrying should be required to have flotation devices.
That also has a parallel impact on the noise factor, because if flotation devices were required they could be required to fly along the seacoast in the ocean areas before entering into the zones leading up to the national parks, and that would, I think, alleviate a large part of the noise problem”
I wondered why there was such apathy when I got here and now I understand why Hawaii has the lowest voter turnout in the nation and most people have given up. This is not how democracy should work. Thousands complain for more than 40 years and nothing changes?
It does feel like we’re doing their job. The regulatory agencies have completely failed here. All claim no jurisdiction.
Sorry I don’t have hearing aids- I do use ear plugs to sleep in.
My ohana can hardly wait to escape this place!!!!!!! Many have already left.

I agree- like regressive politics- you're in the right place. Like being a second or worse class citizen this place is for you. Like being ignored and not being represented- it's the perfect place. Like the way the 3rd world operates E Komo Mai you found your spot.

Ino, is it true that the proposed route would make things worse for Kaloli Point residents? I was told this will be the case so not to support this effort. I unfortunately couldn't attend the rally after having spent most of my afternoon at Joy San Buenaventura's mtg. It'd be nice to get factual information on this.

Prime oceanfront property is worth more, therefore pays higher property taxes, which makes their needs and wants far more important than the great unwashed Acres and Estates residents.
Since the flight paths won't be changing, let's lobby for a property tax override class that takes it back to the $25 minimum, and make up the difference with a surcharge to those lucky landowners that are allowed to actually pursue "quiet enjoyment".
