My wife and I have half-moved (she is there and I am back and forth) from Oahu to HPP. What surprised us was the amount of traffic that we have encountered. This was something that we thought we were leaving behind on Oahu. But anyway, my question is, between HPP and Hilo, when are the times that traffic is bad? On a Tuesday afternoon, my wife dropped me off at the airport at 4:55pm and I landed on Oahu before she got home in HPP. the traffic was really bad from Keeau to where it merges into one lane. I understand now that there is traffic in the mornings heading to Hilo (want to know what time the build up starts and ends)and we have seen the afternoon heading back the other way. We just want to know how to best plan our driving schedules. Thank you for your input. I've really appreciated the info given here on the forum. Thanks again!

Avoid heading into Hilo from about 7:00am to 8:30am or so. Avoiding heading toward Pahoa from about 4:00pm to 5:30pm. Now, I haven't done those drives recently (in the last few months) since I am usually heading out to Pahoa in the morning and toward Hilo in the afternoon, but that's been the heaviest times I've observed.

Should the Big Island start looking at alternative transportation like Oahu has been doing for the last few years?

We leave for work in the mornings BEFORE 6:30 am...or it takes an hour. We get to work around 7:00am.
On the ride home if you hit the road BEFORE 4:45 pm, it's not as bad as the parking lot that is Keaau-Pahoa road (Hwy 130) at 5:00pm.
Also, tonight we had to leave Hilo later than usual (after 5:30pm) and we got home in 30 minutes! Hope this helps!

since they allowed(who in their right mind) the 711 to put in a stop light in kurtistown which is activated when (which we needed like a hole in the head)a car leaves their store, it will stop 20,30 or more cars heading down or up the hill, creating another needless bottleneck

I too thought that light was going to be a pain. (I lived in the acres when it went in.) I havent seen 20-30 cars backed up there... maybe in a few years . But I can say it is nice to feel safer making a left heading up hill. Give and take I guess.

I find that it changes from day to day in the evening. Some times it is backed up at 5:00, and some times it never gets backed up. Usually 6:00-6:30 is the worst(most common)backup time in keaau. Mornings are usally always predictable, leave before 7:00, and after 8:00. It really isnt bad at all compared with kona, Captain cook, and waimea.

Since that light went in we have been seeing it backed all the way up to Kurtistown Assembly of God almost every day. Also there has been a real increase in the number of times we hear screeching brakes at the turn for 8 road right there; people are flying down the hill and then suddenly have to stop, or else there is a pile up. I leave Hilo for Kurtistown between 6:30 and 7 a.m. weekdays, and the highway coming into Hilo is always a solid line of slow moving cars from KTA/Puinako to the Pahoa Highway.
