(This isn't just a "taxation" issue, but also a "reporting/paperwork" issue.) Worse, it applies to everything, including food, rent, prescriptions, medical care... I pay half the property taxes my parents pay. My home is twice the size as theirs, my lot is 4-5 times larger. Although they pay higher taxes, they also receive: * Nearby fire department (which lowers their insurance bill) * Garbage pickup * Appliance pickup * Leaf pickup in the fall * Police response in minutes * Ambulance response in minutes * Community hospitals nearby * Wide paved roads * Nearby parks with sports facilities, bike trails, walking trails along a scenic river * More, more, more... It even applies to the tax! So there’s a GE tax ON the GE tax! That’s why you see that “extra” .1667% on your bill. If you pass the 4% along to your customer, then you have to collect 4% of that 4%. However: you're not required to pass the GET through, you can just pay it on "your" side of the transaction. I believe retailers would actually save money if they adjusted prices to cover their share of the GET instead of making their cashiers count pennies out of the cash drawer. |
