Recommendation for Homeowner's Insurance? - Rumi in Hawaii - 03-05-2008

I thought my old insurance company, USAA, would be my choice for homeowner's insurance, but alas, they won't cover Lava Zone 3. So we're in the market for a new company to cover our newly completed house. Anyone have any input?

Mahalo in advance.

We use Aloha Insurance (http://www.alohains.com/). They were really helpful when we were first looking for coverage. We are in lava zone 3, don't have neighbors who can see our house (and issue with State Farm) and have a detached ag structure so I appreciated their patience.

I'm sure there are others out there too. You should have a number of options to compare for a Zone 3 property.

Its always worth shopping it to Pyramid Insurance (Kevin Yee) or Bishop Insurance (don't have a specific person). Pyramid's always done well for me, and I've heard good things about Bishop (someone let me know if I'm wrong).

After over twenty years, I dumped State Farm for Pyramid on my homeowners. No regrets whatsoever.

I hope your house isn't one newly built on the last kalapana/Kaimu flow!

It seems the owners of the mobile home on the ocean side of the new flow won their payoff. How many have been able to move and how many will be lost? How legal can mobile homes be made?

Bummers - USAA refused to insure mine also, rated structure as a"10", meaning it would totally burn before fire department could save it. I was able to get coverage from Atlas, via Maurice Miranda, 808-775-7227, mmiranda@atlasinsurance.com

I agree with the recommendation on Pyramid and Kevin Yee. They really know how to work it for us folks with houses poised between the Tsunami and the Lava.
