Poll Q: OK to use loud power tools on Sunday? - MarkD - 03-25-2018
Dept. of Health sets noise restrictions for construction outside the hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and all day Sunday (unless exemption is obtained). Chapter 46, Community Noise Control.
Rules apply only to permitted construction and generally only affects contractors. Does not affect yard work or a host of individual noise activities. Highly unlikely that DOH would ask for compliance unless it was a major construction project in town.
Some folks consider the DoH rules to suggest a community custom for noise.
This afternoon near a relative's house in Hilo, a yardman who proudly asserted that he works 7 days a week ran a chainsaw, weed eater and blower. Said the notion that there should be relative quiet on Sunday is rubbish.
My perspective: Out in the boonies? No problem. Have neighbors but they don't object? OK. Noise is intermittent, sporadic (garage projects)? OK. Fast weedeater run (10 minutes)? OK.
In the Hilo case, the guy ran these 3 loud tools for 1 1/2 hours in a very dense part of town. Inconsiderate, IMO. Curious of people's opinions.....

Between a reasonable hour it shouldn't matter. If you want total silence move to Alaska or canada.your nearest neighbor might be 50 miles away or more.

Tryin' to keep it short and avoiding speculation.
1.5 Hours in town on Sunday. (Common occurrence btw) I'm ok with it. Not fun, but it is what it is.
If its REALLY messing you up (sick relative / infant sleeping / wedding for example) and you talk to him and he does not stop ? Then its not right.
Chainsaw @ 7AM would be ugly as would evry day or even every Sunday. I would say the number of times would have bearing on my opinion.

Is Sunday sacred or something? All days are the same, no reason Sunday should get special treatment. If the chainsaw guy is bothering you, tell him it's bothering you.

Around 2005, my neighbor's house was being built and the sawing noise was going on at 2 am keeping both Pam and myself awake. This was out in the boonies. I got up and walked over and asked them to be quiet as it was rather inconvenient. They stopped, were very apologetic and moved their work indoors which was much quieter.
Lesson learned for both parties. Be polite, point out the issue and problem solved.
This may not work with idiots though.

Agreed, but was just trying to make the point that you can actually talk to noisy people and let them know they are creating problems. It may or may not work depending on how both parties deal with it, but my guess is that in most cases being friendly and polite will likely do the trick.
