Not that long ago, the Kea'au-Pahoa highway was a delightful country road that had a tunnel of mango trees lining the stretch that runs between HPP and OLE. The biggest danger was avoiding people who were picking fruit for pickled mango, and everyone had pink fingers for weeks. Does any one by any chance have any photos ?

Mango trees? not Albizia? are you sure they were Mango trees along hwy there?
not many cut down mature mango trees, and they are not real fast growers either...
ie Pohoiki Rd, where they actually put the road pavement in around and between the old trees...

save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha

Yes, they were mangos. They were trimmed where they overhung the road to allow the tall cane trucks to pass under. We enjoyed that quiet drive so much in the 70s. There were so few vehicles. Unfortunately, we didn't take any photos.

You can still see a few mango trees along the remaining sections of the old road right where the old bridge used to be.

Where was the bridge?

The old bridge was right next to the new one. I just passed that section and noticed many mango trees beside the highway.
