Oh My God! Magnum House Set For Demolition - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 04-03-2018

The mansion used in the Magnum P.I. TV series is scheduled to be demolished. It's the end of an era. No more calling for Zeus! Apollo! from the balcony. No more red Ferrari in the driveway defaced with a seemingly insignificant ding, that required an appalling $3000 repair.

Magnum P.I. was probably my favorite TV show of the 1980's. It would be impossible to pick a favorite episode, or character, or plot point, so rather than try, here are two minutes of Johnathon Quayle Higgens III dramatizing my reaction when I heard the news about Robin's Nest:

I wonder where the new Robin's Nest will be...

Tuesday, March 20th 2018

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
The filming for the reboot of the popular 80s television series Magnum P.I. started this week on Oahu.

The shooting location of the pilot episode has not been disclosed, but there are few things we have learned about the new CBS series.

Posting from Oahu, executive producer Peter Lenkov revealed on Twitter that the new show will once again feature a Ferrari.

In the new version of the show, the license plate of the iconic car has been changed to "Robin 2" from "Robin 1".

Also on Twitter this week, Lenkov posted a photo of what appears to be the show's new logo, which includes an image of Diamond Head at sunset.

The reboot will follow Thomas Magnum...

If you like the original 50 series you will have noticed that the house was used extensively in that series well before Magnum. Sad to see the house go.

That’s kind of surprising since it was bought by Obama’s close friend in 2015 for $8.7 million. Seems like it would be worth more to preserve the house then to tear it down. Hawaii News Now speculated that it was the Obama’s that were actually buying it at the time.

I loved the show too and have many memories of them filming on location in Waikiki. I lived at Ala Wai Harbor in the 80’s aboard a trimaran and they were there filming Magnum all the time so I met a lot of them and watched them film over the years. It was fun to watch on TV what I saw them film live, but it takes forever to film each scene.

TC’s helicopter was often filmed at a helipad at Ala Wai Harbor next to the Hilton Rainbow where the Gilligan’s food truck is now so the helicopter was seen all the time buzzing overhead.

Whenever I go back to Waikiki it’s like traveling back in time because you still see the Magnum PI painted helicopter(s) in the air.

Tom Selleck is a very nice guy, not arrogant or unapproachable. I met him a number of times and saw him quite often in Waikiki. He and his girlfriend Jill sat right next to me once in a movie theater in Honolulu, very friendly normal people. Most people gave him space and respected his privacy so they were out in the community all the time. They’ve now been married for 30 years.

They are filming the new Magnum PI pilot, too bad they won’t be using the same estate. It’s a beautiful location in Kailua. I met the dogs once on the beach and got to pet them when their trainer was walking them on Kailua Beach, I remember one was named Joe, I don’t remember the other two, there were actually three Dobermans used for filming “Zeus” and “Apollo”.

It was funny back in the 80’s there were red Ferrari’s for rent all over Waikiki so you would often see tourists driving around in red Ferrari’s wearing a Magnum shirt and Detroit Tigers hat. I always thought that was kind of weird.

good storys SBH.

I think people were just livin' it.

Viewing Hawaii from behind a Ferrari windshield is better than a cell phone camera.

Magnum shirt and Detroit Tigers hat

SBH -
Thanks for the memories, and the great insights and perspective from someone who lived on Oahu at the time.

The Tiger's hat! One of my favorite episodes was when Magnum had to solve a case while simultaneously avoiding the score of a big game he wanted to watch on TV later that day. Hawaii showed games on a tape delay in the '80's. He managed to stop everyone who heard the game on the radio from talking about it, returned to Robin's Nest, grabbed some chips and a cold beer when Higgins of all people, an Englishman with no interest in American sports, barges in and blabs out the score.

Oh my God! Indeed.

"Ivan, did you see the sun rise?"

Some of the best TV to come out of that decade.
