County Employee Safety - mikewj - 05-06-2018
Friday May 4 I went to the Pahoa Library. On arrival I found it was closed. When I got out of my vehicle, the reason became obvious. Strong odor of sulfur in the air, and deep blue haze over Hwy 130 toward Kalapana.
There were four Police units at the intersection of 130/132, and a National Guard presence. Police appeared to be questioning drivers wanting to turn toward Kapoho.
All sensible and reasonable precautions. However, all the uniformed personnel were standing on the highway without any visible masks, breathing in the strong sulfur odor.
I am concerned that these Officers and Guard personnel were put at risk by not being provided safety equipment and were apparently unaware of the danger in their situation. Their jobs are dangerous enough without being put in harm's way by failing to ensure that they were forewarned of this possible hazard.

This afternoon (4:30pm ) there were notices on the library door that said 'conditions permitting', the library 'hoped to have regular hours' this coming week. The wi-fi is still working.
