vog websites - keiregan - 05-07-2018

Can anyone tell me the most reliable up to date vog websites? I use the windy app on my iPhone telling current wind directions and forecasts.
Thanks you! Just got back from captain cook area. Super voggy

Great link! Thanks.

I’m breaking out our gas masks. Changing air quality all the time based on wind, but it can get pretty narly lately. Am going to see if I can actually sleep in it tonight—waking in the morning to heavily coated mucus membranes...

Pretty dang fashionable if I do say so myself!

Cheers,

(Didn’t know exactly where to post this and didn’t think it merited a new thread.)

Please update how long the NBC filter lasts.

I believe a dehumidifier ran in a closed environment will filter out VOG. The VOG bonds with the water and is carried away when it condenses on the coils.

Another way of purifying your air is to soak a towel in baking soda and hang it in front of a fan. In this way the VOG that passes through the towel bonds to the baking soda and is removed from the air. Over time the towel will get dirty with the captured VOG and need to be refreshed.

These ideas are off the top of my head, maybe someone with more knowledge than I can confirm. But gee, that's got to be better than sleeping with a gas mask if you are settling in for the long haul.

We don't have windows, just screens. Short haul. Wink Just experimenting but it works amazingly well with the first test. I take it off and smell it all again.

Terracore: "Please update how long the NBC filter lasts."

Not sure what an NBC filter is, but am assuming it is the filter it came with. Do you have some idea of how long it is supposed to last?

To add to Glindas list:

Add a few tablespoons of baking soda and water to a regular spray bottle. Shake each time before you spray and it will neutralize the SO2 in your room if the windows are closed. I call it vog air freshener. Last night I slept in a small room and sprayed all the curtains and into the air when I woke up briefly.

And I had an Ion air purifier on too and a small dehumidifier going.

Edit to add: once the dehumidifier extracts the water from the vog particles they neutralize without it.

Good luck everyone!

Just for clarity, this is a vog prediction model based on estimates of volcanic emissions and the wind patterns. Please don't take those maps for actual readings as there are no public SO2 monitors in the Pahoa area.

When I asked DOH why this was during the 2014 flow, I was told because the trades tend to take care of it. Wben I asked what about the many days of little or SW wind, the said to extrapolate from Hilo or Mountain view's measurements - if their air is bad yours might be as well. Puna is the red-headed (and red-eyed asthmatic) step child apparently...

Thanks for all the useful info. Would be nice to know the proper gas mask just in case.
