Acid Rain - Gus - 05-09-2018

With all this talk of acid rain, I can't find any reference to how it would affect my catchment tank, as well as might we be drinking enough to be harmful. Any thoughts oh wise ones?

Probably not more dangerous than drinking lemonade, but you can simply add baking soda to negate it.

Dont guess use a ph test strip or meter,i throw 2 boxes baking soda on roof and it treats

After a heavy rain i put 1 qt bleach on roof also and kills algae in pipes going to 10 k

The acid catchment water will also cause accelerated corrosion to your pump and copper piping in your house. If you see green accumulating in your sink or shower, that is the likely cause.

One other thing to be aware of is that the acid gases produced from Kilauea include hydrofluoric acid - although generally at lower concentrations than continental volcanoes, any catchment affected strongly by the acid gases currently being produced in Puna could well have elevated levels of fluoride. Probably best not to drink that water until your system has been flushed by new rainfall.

You can also disconnect the downspouts depending on circumstances - hopefully we can get some monitors in the area soon to see how bad it is. Plenty talk of having to use safe rooms or respirators and that ornamental fish and plants are dying even outside of Leilani Estates.

We disconnected the down spout yesterday and added a box of baking soda. Today ph at 6.8. Added another half box and now it’s “ideal” at 7. according to to our HD ph thingy.
